Washington, DC 4th of July Overview

4th-of-july_s165x110

On a letter dated July 2, 1776, John Adams wrote to his wife, Abigail, predicting that future Americans would commemorate the day the Second Continental Congress completed revisions on the Declaration of Independence with “pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports… bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more.”

Adams was two days early – Americans recognize the date the Declaration was actually signed – but dead on about Independence Day celebrations. And come July 4, there’s no better place to party than America’s capital city.

Fourth of July 2016 in Washington, D.C., features a laundry list of spectacular freedom bashes that would make Adams and the rest of the founding fathers extremely proud. The most patriotic of these happenings is arguably the National Independence Day Parade, where hundreds of floats, military and specialty units, and marching bands make their way down Constitution Avenue.

Another big-time Fourth of July party is A Capital Fourth: America’s Independence Day Celebration, where, red, white, and blue-clad guests enjoy superb live music and an unrelenting fireworks show unlike any other in the nation.

Additionally, Washington, D.C., offers a slew of excellent bars that John’s cousin, Sam Adams, would love. Whether in Georgetown, Dupont Circle, Downtown, or Captiol Hill, there are plenty of neighborhoods at which to catch a revolutionary buzz on the Fourth.

In 2016, show Abigail that John was right and head to Washington, D.C., on Independence Day to ring the bells, cheer for the firework shows, and join the parade.
