Held annually during the first week of October, the Virgin Mobile Freefest is a stellar music festival that takes place just outside of Washington, DC. As its name suggests, the event is completely free to the public.
The Merriweather Post Pavilion – A 40-acre outdoor concert venue in Columbia, Maryland – has played host to the event since 2009, and Virgin Mobile Freefest performers always cover a wide-range of styles from indie rock to rap to hip-hop. Past Virgin Mobile Freefest performers have included big names like deadmau5, Cee-Lo Green, and The Black Keys.
Even though Virgin Mobile Freefest is free, prospective concertgoers need to request a ticket online to attend. Tickets go “on free” Friday at noon before the show, but there is also a pre-sale on Thursday with a link and password released on Virgin Mobile Live’s Twitter account (@virginmlive).
Roughly 50,000 tickets are available during the music festival, and the rush to get one often causes the Ticketfly website that Virgin uses to “sell” Virgin Mobile Freefest tickets to crash. Organizers suggest would-be attendees sign up for a free Ticketfly account in advance, and if users find the website unresponsive it is recommended to clear your cache and restart your browser. Regardless, be tenacious and train those mouse-clicking fingers!
There is a two-ticket limit per person and your ID must match the name on the ticket for entry.
Anyone who doesn’t want to risk missing out can also purchase a “Freemium Package” for $49.50, which includes a ticket, a t-shirt, and a souvenir cup that comes with unlimited free soda on the day of the festival.
Check the Virgin Mobile Freefest website for this year’s lineup of great – and free! – live music.
