With a live performance that defies categorization, Sigur Ros have emerged as a band on the threshold of pop music and the avant-garde. Since 1994, this Icelandic band has been producing eclectic sounds ranging from ambient noise to progressive post-rock. Sigur Ros is comprised of Georg Holm on bass, Orri Dyrason on drums, and Jon “Jonsi” Birgisson on bowed guitar and vocals.
In 1997, the band released their first album Von, which quickly generated buzz in the industry. Their emotive live show won fans around the world, and the release of ( ) in 2002 propelled Sigur Ros into the international spotlight. The tracks on ( ) are sung in Vonlenska or Hopelandic, a made-up language that allows for a greater breadth of interpretation.
Valtari, the sixth studio album by Sigur Ros, was released on Parlophone in 2012 and soon became the band’s first chart-topping record. The album shot up to #7 on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart and debuted at #8 on the UK Albums chart.
