Rihanna, born Robyn Rihanna Fenty in Barbados in 1988, is a successful recording artist, fashion designer, and actress. Her career took flight after meeting American record producer Evan Rogers through mutual friends in 2003. Rogers, impressed by Rihanna’s vocal skills, urged her to move to the United States to pursue a music career. In 2005, she auditioned and signed a six-album record deal with Def Jam Recordings, which is owned by artist Jay-Z.
Rihanna’s debut single, “Pon De Replay”, was released in 2005 and peaked at number two on the Billboard 100 chart. However, it was not until the release of her third studio album Good Girl Gone Bad did Rihanna begin to receive widespread recognition and praise. The album featured some of the performer’s greatest hits, such as “Umbrella”, which topped the UK chart for 10 consecutive weeks, and “Don’t Stop the Music.” She also won the Grammy Award for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration alongside Jay-Z for “Umbrella” in 2008. Good Girl Gone Bad also sold over seven million copies worldwide and became Rihanna’s best-selling album to date.
In 2009, Rihanna was originally scheduled to perform at the 51st Grammy Awards, but had to cancel due to a dispute with artist Chris Brown. Images of the performer abused and injured surfaced, and Chris Brown was subsequently charged with felony assault.
Rihanna has also collaborated with other well-known artists on a number of popular songs, such as “Love the Way You Lie” with Eminem. The song sold more than five million copies in the United States and received five Grammy nominations. In late 2012, Rihanna also released her latest album, Unapologetic, which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. Her concerts are often jam-packed with people waiting to listen to some of her greatest hits, such as “Rude Boy” and “S&M.”
