Festival of the Madonna della Salute Description

Every year on November 21, Venice bustles with the annual Festival of the Madonna della Salute. The festival celebrates the founding of the Santa Maria della Salute (Basilica of St Mary of Health) back in 1630. As the legend goes, a plague decimated most of the city’s population, and the city’s senate announced that a new church would be built in Mary’s honor once the plague ended. The city was soon cured and the Salute (meaning “salvation” or “health”) was built in remembrance of the event.

The Festival of the Madonna della Salute features street vendors selling traditional Venetian foods like zaleti and pevarini. Pick up some candles to take with you into the church on this day of solemnity and celebration. Venetians also take part in the ancient custom of eating castradina, a soup made from dried mutton and cabbage.

The Festival of the Madonna della Salute is free and all ages are welcome to enjoy this ancient Venice celebration. After the festivities, take part in Venetian drinking and culinary customs at the cafés and restaurants throughout the city.
