Venice is one of many cities around the world that hosts a celebration for the weeks leading up to Fat Tuesday – a tradition that marks the beginning of the Catholic observance of Lent. Unlike Mardi Gras in New Orleans or Carnival in Rio, however, the Venetian Carnevale is a more refined and civilized affair. Thousands of residents and visitors dress in elaborate 18th century costumes and masks – many of which take an entire year to create – and parade around Piazza San Marco or pose on various bridges to the delight of spectators from all over the world. Many free activities take place both day and night, including parades, masquerades, concerts, and dance performances, though many revelers choose to spend their time in stylish café’s that dot Piazza San Marco and offer a wonderful atmosphere for marveling at all the sights, sounds, and colors.
