Benedizione del Fuoco Description

During the Easter season, Christians anticipate the crucifixion, death, and resurrection of Jesus by participating in Lent. The week before Easter Sunday is known as Holy Week and begins on Palm Sunday, ultimately ending on Holy Saturday.

Ever year on Good Friday during Holy Week in Venice, Christians head to St. Mark’s Basilica to witness the Benedizione del Fuoco. At the Benedizione del Fuoco, all the lights are turned off and a fire is lit in the church’s narthex (or entrance porch). Participants receive communion and the four natural elements – water (at the baptismal font), air (surrounding environment), fire (large altar candle), and earth (faithful attendees) – are all represented.

Benedizione del Fuoco takes place at St. Mark’s Basilica.
