Apr 5, 2013 Local Hot Spot, and by local I mean in the state of Illinois. "Noted for being "Chicago's Beach," North Ave Beach is fast becoming a hot spot for not only local chicagoans, but for suburbanites as well (or at least the ones who don't want to pay to sit on Glencoe beach). However, don't let the crowds keep you from having a great time in the Chicago sun. Located conveniently just east of Lake Shore Drive and North Avenue, this beach, complete with chaise lounge and umbrella rentals, is most certainly one of the most popular places in the city when the weather gets warm (and even more so on the weekends). Whether your into sun bathing or people watching, the locale is a great place to go and briefly forget that you're in Illinois, as the beach has a tendency to remind one of Miami Beach (sans the nude section). If you go early in the morning, or during the week, it's not unlikely to see a yoga or other fitness classes littered about the sand. Further down the beach are several volleyball courts where you can show your spiking skills alongside summer volleyball leagues. A word of caution to this otherwise fairy tale: parking is very limited and terribly expensive, so if at all possible, park further west of the beach and either hoof it over to the beach or hop on the 72 bus for a $2 ride to the sand. Apr 5, 2013 Best Drag I've Seen. The half priced drinks are swell, too. "It was not of my own volition that I spent an evening at the Kit Kat lounge in Boystown, but I will say this: it's one great place to celebrate someone's birthday. Known for it's world class drag queens, KKL is becoming known more and more to the locals as a place to get not only some great entertainment, but also some great eats as well. On certains days throughout the week, drinks are half priced (but just as strong) and this of course only makes the performances by the divas that much better. When not performing, the low lit space is akin to any other high class supper clubs throughout chicago; black and white movies are projected on the the walls, and music is up to date and relevant. As a straight male, i thoroughly enjoyed myself, and encourage those with an open mind and desire to consume martinis with names like "the Porn Star" to visit the Kit Kat Lounge. It's sure not to disappoint." hide

Apr 5, 2013 Mexican street food in the City of Big Shoulders: best tacos this side of the river. "There's something to be said about a thriving cash only restaurant in a credit card world, especially when this restaurant is consistently packed to the walls with hungry patrons (many who have been waiting for a seat for some time) regardless of the season. With the smell of carnitas and bourbon a plenty in the air, Big Star continues to grow it's fan base since it's opening. While their website would suggest their main concern is beer, cocktails, and whiskey, Chef Paul Kahan and Chef Justin Large would beg to differ. Drawing inspiration from California style Mexican street food, their menu is simple and elegant, with super reasonably priced tacos that warrant a more than deserving second serving (or third). Despite being crowded nearly all of the time, the less than $10 per most items (shots and beers included) is well worth the wait if you find yourself standing on the sidewalk outside of Damen and Milwaukee. Once seated, you're almost certainly in for a treat, the likes of which have yet to be seen anywhere else in the greater Wicker Park neighborhood." hide
