  • The Passenger

    Madrid
    Cocktail Bar / Restaurant
The Passenger - Cocktail Bar | Restaurant in Madrid.
May 15, 2013 Great cocktails... "My take: The Passenger makes killer Gin and Tonics! It is definitely the place to go if you want a good gin and tonic or any other cocktail. It's a good place to go after work to chill and grab a drink or to go out on weekends with your friends. On weekends the vibe is different from weekdays, because on Friday and Saturday the downstairs dancefloor is open and there is a DJ where you can dance. The music those nights is a mix between dance music and old school hip hop. On Sundays there's a great event there called “Lonche y Ponche”. Pretty much you pay 12 euros and you get a bunch of appetizer foods and a dessert along with all you can drink punch. To top it off you have a live Jazz band playing for you. The ambiance is just perfect with the walls looking as though you are sitting in a train passing by different landscapes. I highly recommend this place as a great bar to spend time at meeting new people and to catch up with friends! Crowd: The crowd is laid back, down to earth, friendly, and chill! It's great place to meet new people and to catch up with friends. Cocktails and cuisine: The passenger makes great specialty cocktails and as I mentioned before their gin and tonics are excellent! When to go: Go during the week if you want a chill drinking experience and go on the weekends if you want to have the option of going to the downstairs club part of the bar. It is also busier on the weekends. Insider info: The “Lonche and Ponche” special on Sundays for 12 euros is definitely worth it. You get unlimited punch, a few plates of snack food and a dessert. However this is only from 6-9:30pm on Sundays. What to wear: Anything goes because the vibe is chill and down to earth. A lot of the guys have that hipster look with glasses and graphic tees and the girls that I’ve seen have had funky hairstyles, high waisted pants and cool tops. " hide

  • La Tabacalera

    Madrid
    Venue / Café
La Tabacalera - Venue | Café in Madrid.
May 15, 2013 An underground Madrid experience! "My take: La Tabacalera is the most unique space in Madrid. It is also hands down my favorite spot in the city! It is an old tobacco factory turned into a somewhat community centre, art space, and live music venue. You can literally do any sort of activity in here. Even if you have an event idea, you can contact the program coordinators of La tabacalera and you can use the space for the event to take place. Because it's a space completely open to any public there is a wide range and activities and classes! I also should mention that most of these classes, activities, and events are free! Huge upside! Twice a month they have a huge music event. For example last month I went to an urban festival one weekend and a reggae festival in the other. Since there are so many different rooms (being that it's an ex-factory), in one room there would be one guy rapping in Arabic, the next would have people scratching, and the next would have people doing graffiti. There is also an outdoor patio/courtyard area where people would be playing basketball or skateboarding. There are also other events such as vintage markets, “lucha libre”, Spanish classes, African percussion instruments, classes on how to grow your own vegetables, and more. You can literally find anything and everything! I also have to mention that it is so funky inside, as there's graffiti all over the walls. Crowd: Being that you can do any type of activity in La Tabacelera, there's a huge variety in the crowd. You can find people anywhere from punks and rockers to hippies and hipsters. It is also filled with many artists and musicians. Generally though, the crowd is friendly, down to earth, and laid back. Cocktails and Cuisine: None When to go: You can go during the day or at night. It depends on when the classes or events are happening that you would like to go to. Insider info: To find out what and when different events are taking place check their website regularly! What to wear: You can literally wear anything because the vibe is really chill and down to earth. There are guys in rastafari braids and crazy coloured outfits and same with some of the girls. You can also see a lot of hipster types with glasses, blouses, and cool pants or skirts. " hide

  • Yambala

    Madrid
Bar / Hookah Bar / Lounge
Yambala - Bar | Hookah Bar | Lounge in Madrid.
Mar 21, 2013 Smoke that hookah! "My take: The friendliest hookah lounge in all of Madrid! Seriously, it's true...the staff is so friendly and it is definitely one of my favorite spots to go to in the city. When I first discovered this place I was looking to kill some time because I was waiting up on some friends. Its loud reggae music drew me inside and I was welcomed by the extremely friendly young staff, two Morrocan guys that run the place. They asked if I wanted to have dinner with them as they had cooked traditional Morrocan rice and soup just upstairs and had brought it down to the bar to eat. I decided to join them and they set up a seat for me with my food just at the bar and the three of us were just there eating food. It was unreal because I had never met them in my life and they offered me food from their country the moment I walked in. Obviously I ordered I beer with food and ended up spending a few hours at the bar having a nice conversation with them. The crowd: The crowd is early 20's and mid 30's and a nice variety of locals, expats, hipsters, hippies, groups of people, and couples out on a date. The vibe is chill, laid back, conversational, and easy going. It is a great place to wind down after a long day and even catch up with friends! Cocktails & Cuisine: They do not serve food, but they are well known for their cocktails and their teas. They make a killer mojito at 6 euros! It is a very popular choice! Also, being that the place is owned by Moroccans, their Morrocan mint tea, known as “Te Moruno”, is delightful and very traditional. The tea costs 2.50 euros. When to go: You can really go anytime, mid day or at night. It just depends on the vibe you are looking for. In the middle of the day there or a weekday night there is not as many people so it's easier to find a place to sit and is more chill. However, if you go on a Friday or Saturday night the place will be packed and it will be difficult to get a seat, so I recommend getting there earlier like around 9pm. Insider info: When you order a hookah it normally comes with water. But if you want to have a crazy night, you can specify and tell the server to put alcohol in it instead of water! Prices: The prices are moderate. A hookah costs about 10 euros, a tea costs 2.50 euros, and any cocktail is 6 euros. What to wear: You can literally wear anything you like because it is a very casual and chill place " hide
