  • Casey's Irish Pub

    Los Angeles
Bar / Irish Pub / Live Music Venue / Restaurant
Casey's Irish Pub - Bar | Irish Pub | Live Music Venue | Restaurant in Los Angeles.
Aug 24, 2012 Best Irish Bar in LA. Period. "Don't kid yourselves, my friends. All others are pretenders to the throne. From awesome food from a top-notch chef to great drinks, frothy pints, and a crowd that is the right mix with nary a meathead to be seen, Casey's has it all. It may be tucked away in the ever-burgeoning downtown area rather than one of the more traditionally bustling neighborhoods, Casey's is worth the drive even if that's all you're going for - and as all Angelenos know, that's saying something. If you're going to a Laker or Kings game? Casey's before and after. Maybe even during if your seats suck. Art walk? Casey's. Staying at one of the hotels on a business trip? Casey's. Working downtown? Durr. One of my favorite bars not only in LA but in any city I've ever been to, Casey's has never once failed to deliver great food and an even better time. " hide

  • Fishbone

    Fishbone

"I saw these cats WAY back in the day when I was running live music venues in Seattle and let me tell you something: if you don't have fun at a Fishbone show (pulls out his Buffalo Bill voice from "Silence of the Lambs") - You Don't Know What Fun Is!!! These guys are what indie music is all about. It should be a requirement for anyone into indie rock and/or ska to see one of their kinetic shows. I've seen several Mighty, Mighty Bosstones shows and at their peak they were a helluva live show, but the nights I caught Fishbone back in the day will be indelibly etched in my psyche. I couldn't tell you the venues I saw them in (though I could guess and probably be right), but I can tell you I think I lost ten pounds per show, dancing, moshing, and flat-out grooving to what is undoubtedly one of the greatest indie bands of all time - ska or not. Just go to iTunes and download "Everyday Sunshine" and TRY to be unhappy. it's physically impossible. See them before it's too late because bands can't tour forever (except the Stones) and this brand of funky fun is a can't-miss life experience. " hide

  • Rock & Reilly's

    Los Angeles
    Pub / Whiskey Bar
Rock & Reilly's - Pub | Whiskey Bar in Los Angeles.
Aug 23, 2012 Not Quite Irish Bar, Not Quite Hipster Hang "Rock & Reilly's is the embodiment of the quintessential Irish conundrum: what, exactly, am I? It's the existential question at the heart of all Irish poets, tenors, and writers. It's on the strip so it has to have an element of The Scene: it has to cater to the hip crowd, the trendsetters, and the young set who make up the Strip's clientele every night. But it's an Irish bar, so it has to cater to serious drinkers (see:forty-five whiskeys) and serve some good fish and chips (which it does). But the LA trend of sportiness is also here, with TV screens attracting the crowds for every game, something a tried and true Irish bar would eschew. Couple TV's is fine, but it should never interfere with the night's purpose. It's also a little too shiny, a little too glitzy for the Irish bar/pub designation. It makes an interesting amalgam of disparate elements of different types of bars that somehow, in a funky, noisy, jostling sort of way actually works. Even with the bar is situated at the bottom of the steps that lead to the mezzanine - a design flaw that causes traffic jams intermittently throughout the night (at least on the non-weekend nights I have been there). For the guys, there are plenty of beautiful women - both on staff and in the crowd - to keep you occupied while you imbibe and satisfy your need for some Irish soul food (of both the liquid and solid varieties). The music's great, bartenders are knowledgeable, friendly (imagine that in LA and on the strip!), and gregarious, and the ambiance does all it can to create in spirit what the place's potpourri of physical and design elements can't quite mesh together. All in all its definitely on the "Give it a shot" list - both euphemistically and for the pickleback!" hide
