    Crystal Castles
    Jul 20, 2013
"I once had a very vivid dream of a wild dance party in a room covered in mirrors, filled with light and haze, with exclusively Crystal Castles' first album blasting from the ceiling. I should have seen them when I had the chance back in 2008. Before they turned into...whatever the hell they are now. Bands evolve, I understand. It's just so unfortunate that Crystal Castles didn't make more music closer to their original sound between the release of their first and second albums. They're a pretty polarizing band, and I think most people fall into the two camps of Crystal Castles I and Crystal Castles II. I personally prefer the more hardcore, screaming, elektro dance music of their first record to the ambient, experimental, often droning work on their second. As it stands, I have no desire to see Crystal Castles anymore. In fact, the very mention of them upsets me. They would inevitably play their newer material, and I will be bored and say they sold out and get a huge amount of backlash from the shoegaze IDM fanatics out there. It's really such a shame that their one glimpse of what I consider genius lasted for so short a period of time, when they toured and produced so little. I long for the day they play one throwback show of their first album and nothing else. Who knows if they're even the kind of band that would last long enough in the mass psyche to warrant that level of nostalgia. For now, I just have to settle for blasting Crystal Castles I in a dark closet, pretending it's the glass palace of my dreams. That's how sad new Crystal Castles makes me." hide

    The Wombats
    Jul 19, 2013
"Oh, where to begin... My first Wombats show may very well be my favorite concert of all time. At least top three. Their lyrics run the gamut of ironic, desperate, clever, and touching all at the same time. All while amazingly keeping up a decidedly upbeat rhythm with the most adorable harmonies and a cappella interludes you could ask for. I think their songs "Here Comes the Anxiety" and "Let's Dance to Joy Division" capture their nature the best; the titles themselves showcase what I dream their souls to be. A mix of nerves and shyness coupled with a desire for decadence and a shameless celebration of misery. The Wombats make everything fun and lively while still addressing and even basking in the ironic desperation and anxiety we all sometimes feel. If there's anything to be learned from their success and rabid fan base, it's that there exists an entire realm of society seeped in depression, captivated by the prospect of turning that sadness into one epic party, together." hide
