  • The Abbey Food & Bar

    Los Angeles
Bar / Gay Bar / Gay Club / Lounge / Restaurant
The Abbey Food & Bar - Bar | Gay Bar | Gay Club | Lounge | Restaurant in Los Angeles.
Apr 26, 2013 Let your freak flag fly! "The Abbey is legendary for a reason. Go on a Saturday night and each of your senses will be overwhelmed. Atmosphere: Wild. Think fog machine, go go dancers, house music, drag queens. It's like something Stefon from SNL would describe. But it is a blast. I went with a large group with straight men and women, and everyone had fun. Dress: If you show up covered in glitter and wearing a speedo, no one will blink twice. Wear as much or as little as you want. Anything goes. During the day, the crowd is more dressy casual. Food and drink: Varies depending on when you go. During brunch I had some amazing and well-crafted cocktails. On a Saturday night I had a gin and tonic that was so bad I ended up giving it away. The biggest con of the Abbey is the crowd size. Last time I went was a Saturday night and the place was clearly over capacity, but they just kept letting people in. It got to the point where it took me 15 minutes to get out of the dance floor so I could step outside and breathe. The bartenders and waiters are nice, but the security people not so much. When you let in way too many people, don't yell at them for standing near a door. Overall, the Abbey is a unique experience every visitor and Angeleno must have at least once. " hide

  • BottleRock (Culver City)

    Los Angeles
    Restaurant / Wine Bar
BottleRock (Culver City) - Restaurant | Wine Bar in Los Angeles.
Apr 26, 2013 A great place to eat, drink, and be merry. "After seeing a movie in downtown Culver City, my friend and I were famished and BottleRock was within eyesight so we walked right in without even looking at the menu. Going in with no expectations, I was pleasantly surprised. Atmosphere: I went on a weekday evening and the bar was crowded but reasonably quiet and comfortable. We were able to have a conversation without straining our ears. The crowd was composed of twenty and thirty somethings, most wearing dressy casual clothing. You won't be shunned if you show up in jeans and a t-shirt, but you will feel slightly out of place. Drinks and cuisine: Delicious. Our waitress was knowledgable and gave great recommendations when we didn't know what to choose from the extensive drink options. As far as food goes, we split the arugula salad, mac n cheese, and chicken panini. All of which were wonderful and filling. BottleRock is pricey, but worth it. Definitely check it out for a date or happy hour. You'll be one happy camper. " hide

  • Umami Burger Santa Monica

    Los Angeles
    Burger Joint / Restaurant
Umami Burger Santa Monica - Burger Joint | Restaurant in Los Angeles.
Apr 25, 2013 Best. Burgers. Ever. "First, let me say I love Umami. Perhaps too much. I've been to almost every location and tried every menu item. Second, I will say the Santa Monica location is by far the best. Hidden next to Fred Segal, you'll only find Umami if 1. you look it up or 2. you recognize the logo. The atmosphere is great compared to most burger joints I've been to. The noise level is moderate and the staff never rushes you. Another plus is the option of outdoor seating next to a quiet street. Dress as casually as you want to. The younger crowd has a range of rich people decked out in designer clothes to people in sweatpants. I've heard people complain about the prices, but you get what you pay for. Umami has high quality food and it's worth every penny, and the portion sizes are probably the actual meal size humans are meant to eat. Everyone will find the burger of their dreams, including vegetarians and kids. Recommendations: be sure to try the truffle fries. The manly burger, truffle burger, and hatch burger will keep you coming back for more. " hide
