  • Ground Zero Coffee House

    Los Angeles
    Café / Live Music Venue
Ground Zero Coffee House - Café | Live Music Venue in Los Angeles.
Feb 14, 2013 Really hard to find, but worth the search "My Take: For being an entirely student-run establishment from the servers and baristas to the performers, Ground Zero is quite impressive. During the day it’s a great environment to study and do work, and at night the performances are interesting and often really good. The Scene: The crowd here is mostly SC students and grad students with some faculty mixed in here and there. It’s generally a more artsy and hipster crowd, but that can be inferred from the type of place it. It definitely has a very laid-back vibe and ultimately very positive atmosphere. Food & Cocktails: The shakes at Ground Zero are the best at SC, for sure. The coffee drinks are also good and work great as study aides. Prices: The prices are super affordable (surprisingly enough being an SC place). Milkshakes cost between $4–$5 and all other drinks cost less than that. What to Wear: It’s a trendy, hipster place so take from that what you will. But keep in mind it’s a common place for being to study so its definitely casual. Insider Info/When to go: Open Mic nights can be funny but also pretty awkward if the stand-up is bad. Any student musical performance is probably going to be pretty good so I would say any of those nights are the best nights to go. " hide

  • O'Neil's on Wells

    Chicago
American Restaurant / Bar / Pizza Place / Sports Bar
O'Neil's on Wells - American Restaurant | Bar | Pizza Place | Sports Bar in Chicago.
Feb 14, 2013 Relaxed, Semi-Dive bar in the Loop "My Take: Formerly Alcock’s, O’Neil’s on Wells is one of the more laidback bars in The Loop, with a mix of rock music and sports décor and an overall anything goes vibe. If you’re looking for a nice hole-in-the-wall bar in The Loop, which is pretty hard to come by, O’Neil’s on Wells is a solid spot, especially for Happy Hour. The Scene: The crowd here is pretty hard to pinpoint but it is generally younger so 20s and 30s. Everyone from sports fans, to business people after work, to your typical dive bar crowd can be found at O’Neil’s. Food & Cocktails: The pizza, as it was at Alcock’s is still the signature food here with people coming here for lunch and dinner solely for a slice or two. Not only is their pizza their signature food, its their only food so it’s convenient that it tastes good. The beer selection is pretty typical – it is not limiting and has all the standard beers, but you’re not going to discover any cool new beers either. Prices: The prices at O’Neil’s are very affordable with a beer costing $4 or $5 and a pizza costing $9 or $12. For the Loop those are some solid deals. What to Wear: Like I said earlier, the crowd is pretty heterogeneous so you don’t really have to worry about sticking out because of what you’re wearing. People come here in everything from a suit and tie to a T-shirt and jeans. Insider Info/When to go: The best time to go to O’Neil’s on Wells is definitely Happy Hour because it packs up pretty well so there is a good crowd but it also has a ton of seating so you don’t have to worry about standing up the whole time. • House of Music & Entertainment (H.O.M.E.)

    Chicago
American Restaurant / Concert Venue / Sports Bar
House of Music & Entertainment (H.O.M.E.) - American Restaurant | Concert Venue | Sports Bar in Chicago.
Feb 12, 2013 One of the best bars in the Northwest Suburbs "My Take: HOME bar is a really new edition to the suburban bar scene and has been popular since the first day it opened. They attract fairly big name performers for being out in the suburbs and also have a great area for watching sports games with tons of big TVs and beer taps in the booths. HOME is definitely one of the best concert venues and sports bars in the Northwest Suburbs. The Scene: The crowd is very young, with most people still in college or recently graduated. However, there isn’t a specific kind of people here because it depends on whether its trivia night and who is performing. HOME is also a sports bar so the fratty, jock stereotype does fit a lot of the people who go here, but there are other crowds as well. Food & Cocktails: As I said, there are beer taps in the booths and tons of beers on tap at the bar so HOME is definitely a beer-first bar. However, it does have a full bar selection so any normal mixed drink is fair game. The food is standard bar food but tastes good for what it is. As in most sports bars, the pizza and wings are the general highlights of the menu. Prices: HOME is very fairly priced, with drinks costing around $5 or less. There are daily specials here so the already affordable menu can be exploited even more. HOME does have a cover on nights with performers, usually between $5-$10. What to Wear: If you’re going to watch a game, pretty much anything goes. However, at night it becomes a little bit less casual with most guys in some kind of polo shirt and nicer jeans. Insider Info/When to go: The best nights are Trivia Night on Tuesday and any night where there is live music. The biggest names usually play on Saturday nights so that is probably the best night of the week at HOME. " hide
