Feb 19, 2013 Come Once, Come Evermore "Like your fun cheap, simple and flowing with Natty Bo? Then the Raven Grill on Mt. Pleasant St. is the dive bar for you. Located on the main drag of one of D.C.’s most diverse neighborhoods, the cash-only Raven is one of the few neighborhood bars that actually lives up to its reputation and aesthetic. No, there isn’t actually a grill and the only food available inside is cheap potato chips, but the joint’s stocked jukebox more than makes up for any gastronomic shortcomings. Pop in a few dollars and jam the night (or afternoon) away to everything from the Velvet Underground and Motown to compilations selected from the bar’s boozy annual New Years parties. If you want twenty page menus of microbrews, then please stay away. But if you dig good tunes, eccentric regulars, and that oh-so-rare feeling of authenticity, stop by for a $2 Natty Bo or a stick around a little longer and pickle your brain with a few more drinks and some good old rock-and-roll." hide

Feb 19, 2013 Three's The Charm "Everything comes better in threes. Triple cheeseburgers, Destiny’s Child, and the (original) Star Wars Trilogy… the list goes on. That’s why you should check out DC9 at the corner of 9th and U St. Boasting three bars on three floors, DC9 is at the heart of U St’s recent renaissance. If you’re looking for a (relatively) more relaxing evening, grab a booth at the first floor bar. If you want to get your hipster dance moves on, head upstairs to the second floor where the bar hosts bands and DJ’s. Entrance to the dance area usually requires a cover charge ranging from $5 to $15, but it’s well worth it to check out upcoming bands and hip electronic acts. DC9’s highlight, however, is its third floor rooftop. Come up here to cool off after building up a sweat downstairs and to sample great views of the U St. Corridor. While it’s technically more expensive to dance at DC9 compared to other bars on U St. (Velvet Lounge and Dodge City, for example, don’t require cover charges), the bar’s happy hour is a steal, especially if you get a spot on the rooftop. I’ve never been let down by a night at DC9. Come here expecting cool vibes, funky beats, and hipsters galore, and you’ll agree." hide
