  • Bimhuis

    Concert Venue / Jazz Club
Bimhuis - Concert Venue | Jazz Club in Amsterdam.
Nov 8, 2013 Tuesday Night Sessions in the Bimhuis "If there is one scene alive and vibrant within Amsterdam it is jazz. This may be strongly part to the jazz course at the Conservatorium Van Amsterdam. The students from the course flock around the city to different joints each night to have a jam and every Tuesday it is the Bimhuis they descend on. Beginning at 10.00 with the promise of a free drink to anyone who plays more than one piece the bravest venture out first, often a band who play together regularly and have an idea in their minds. My first night in Amsterdam I went to the Bimhuis (my first night being a Tuesday) and it was a great welcome to the city and the jazz scene it holds. The night is free and the venue is lovely, nestled into the protruding block you get great views of the city and water. I often found myself watching the ships slip by as I listened to the music. Jams are a great way of getting into jazz as you follow the ideas from one solo to the next and it was a great testament to the high levels of skill and improvisation from the Conservatorium. If you like jazz and want a free night out, remember to bring money for drinks and coffees from the bar, head to the Bimhuis. Just don’t sit near the front, the trumpets can be quite loud. " hide

Nov 8, 2013 A nice respite from the city "How nice it is to find a decent pub. What defines a decent pub? I would say two things: the character and drinks and The Red Lion has both. As soon as you enter you are greeted by the warmth of your traditional ale house, wooden furnishings add to the coziness; then a wall of prime ministers to watch you as you drink. The barman was friendly and gave me plenty of advice about the ales that were in stock. I would advice any traveler to London to visit the pub when in the area; it’s refreshing to find such a homely tavern in an area so often filled with chain bars and soulless bars." hide

Nov 8, 2013 A unique club offering more than first meets the eye "My first night out ever in London and I was dubious for what it was going to hold. Heading out with my friends after a birthday meal we set course straight for Proud Camden. You always hear stories about the vibrancy of Camden, well if you want to experience it come to this club. The night was already in full force when we arrived, the room heaving and burlesque dancers spinning above us in hoops. We forgot to go to the bar for a full ten minutes as we were mesmerised by their skills and sheer strength. Fire poi was also on offer on stage and the performers don’t hold back. Go further in and you’ll find what once were stables are now stylish booths. We found ourselves on the dance floor partying non stop for most of the night. Be prepared to get sticky, it’s a good atmosphere and when you want to cool off, or have a smoke, the smoking area outside offers respite, breathing space and a relaxing chance to mix with the other people there. I have to admit, my memories of Proud Camden are slightly hazed by one too many drinks, from before and during, but the main memory is that of a brilliant night out, great music and a plan already forming to return next time we’re in London.
