Ben's Chili Bowl - Historic Restaurant in Washington, DC.
May 1, 2013 Great Food at Great Prices "If you want to eat good food and you're on a tight budget, Ben's Chili Bowl is the place to go. One time I ordered the chili fries for only $3 and they served enough food to fill me up. I get a chuckle out of the sign at the counter proclaiming that, under company policy, only two people are entitled to free food-- Bill Cosby and President Obama." hide

National Cherry Blossom Festival - Festival in Washington, DC.

"The National Cherry Blossom Festival is a month-long series of public events that are designed to coincide with the blooming of the cherry blossom trees in the Tidal Basin. Some of the events are pricey (such as the Spirit of Washington's special cherry blossom cruises along the Potomac River) but the vast majority of events are either free or low cost. One example is the Southwest Fireworks Festival, which is a day-long festival featuring a Japanese beer garden (featuring Kirin Beer), live music, and arts and crafts booths where one can buy handcrafted items. The festival ends with fireworks over the Potomac River. Another example is the Sakura Matsuri, a day-long street festival featuring Japanese performers and all kinds of handmade Japanese crafts including dolls, kimonos, and chopsticks. The admission is only $5, which is a great deal." hide

Awesome Con - Conference / Convention | Festival in Washington, DC.

"I went to the first Awesome Con event in 2013. It was a pretty fun event. There was a large dealer room which sold all kinds of comic books and graphic novels ranging from Spider-Man to My Little Pony. There were also dealer tables for up and coming comic artists who were selling their own self-published comic books. The biggest highlight for me were the numerous cosplayers who attended dressed as all kinds of characters including superheroes, villains, and even Disney characters. Many of those costumes were handmade and the creativity involved (including paying attention to the tiniest details) is totally astounding. I only went to two panels. One was a session of Dr. Sketchy's Anti-Art School where people brought their own art supplies and drew life drawings of three models. (One was introduced as burlesque performer Eyrie Twilight. The other two were cosplayers whose names I didn't catch but they were dressed up to resemble identical twins.) The other panel I attended was a competition called Super Art Fight. Basically two artists start drawing a giant mural based on a selected theme (such as The Avengers). Then they switch sides and alter the previous drawings. Every five minutes the selected theme changes and the artists keep on switching sides to alter the drawings. The competition ends after 20 minutes and the audience selects the winner. This contest has all the atmosphere of a pro- wrestling match. There are two different types of admissions--a cheaper regular admission and a more expensive VIP admission. The VIP admission is more limited and it includes additional goodies like posters and t-shirts. I noticed that the first two rows of chairs in each of the panels were limited only to those with VIP passes. This may be an issue if you have vision problems or if a panel is very crowded. I had a regular pass and I had no problem with seeing the front of the panels I attended." hide
