  • The Pour House

    Boston
    Bar / Restaurant
The Pour House - Bar | Restaurant in Boston.
Feb 28, 2013 Pour House Potential "Being a native of Boston it’s hard to imagine the city without it’s dive bars and seemingly overcrowded nation of Red Sox fans. Then again, there are certain areas of the cities that are sacred and around Boylston Street and the Back Bay. I like to steer clear of the “Game On” attitude that comes from enjoying festivities down near Kenmore Square. The Pour House isn’t completely devoid of Kenmore Square’s good-natured fun though. The décor is slightly outdated and random - you’re not quite sure if you’re in a country western movie, or maybe you just walked into the wrong bar. Most people who love going out in the Back Bay and the South End know that there is no end to the amount of swank that can be put upon you by places like Cleary’s and Brownstone. The great part about the Pour House is its legitimacy. You’ll get a good beer for a cheap price and maybe even find someone relatively attractive to engage in a conversation at the bar; however, there’s some down sides to the Pour House as well. There doesn’t seem to be a general theme to the place – are you a restaurant? More of a bar? I’m confused. I think we’re all confused. While Dillon’s down the street screams sophistication for people who can’t afford it, the Pour House seems to scream lack of sophistication for the same types. The potential is palpable once you walk in the door, but the line to get downstairs only to find another bar with a similar scene that is upstairs puts me off. Maybe it’s the giant mug of beer that’s clouding my vision and perception but I do believe that the Pour House could use some revamping – but it’s never short of a good time with a mix of high class ladies out for drinks after work and those catching a drink after the 9th inning. Either way, the Pour House in a gem, but don’t expect to leave reeking of class and sophistication. " hide

  • The Jane Ballroom

    New York
    Cocktail Bar / Hotel Bar
The Jane Ballroom - Cocktail Bar | Hotel Bar in New York.
Feb 28, 2013 Has Been? Or Could Be? "The Jane is chic. I will give it that. But don’t let the inviting fireplace, winged chairs, and witty tchotchkes fool you, err on the side of caution if you want to relax. The Jane was once considered the chicest place to go for drinks and late night chatter with the likes of Mary-Kate and Ashley Olson visiting with frequency. Now it appears that any old socialite can get into The Jane but there will be some eye rolling. Ironically I don’t feel comfortable at The Jane unless I’m in sky-high heels and something directly off the runway; however, the ambiance gives the place a little more of a sufferable attitude. There is no end to the drinks and young 20-somethings fresh out of work enjoy showing off their cash flow by offering their friends bottle service. The point? Don’t attend if you’re looking for old school elegance and New York refinement; however, it can be fun to peer around at the up-and-coming New York social scene while enjoying a relatively inexpensive cocktail and some good music. The Jane is never short of entertaining on an otherwise blasé New York evening. " hide

  • Grafton Street Pub and Grill

    Boston
Bar / Irish Pub / Restaurant
Grafton Street Pub and Grill - Bar | Irish Pub | Restaurant in Boston.
Feb 28, 2013 Ireland Never Looked So Good "Grafton Street pub is by far one of the most universal restaurants in Harvard Square. Whether you’re going for drinks with Harvard buddies or you need a place to take your mom for mother’s day, this restaurant and pub has everything you may need. On a quiet Wednesday lunch you can find anyone from a Harvard student to an older professional eating away or conferring over a business lunch. On a Friday night the crowd gets a little more rowdy but is never lacking in the classy entertainment department. The crowd doesn’t scream “Harvard Bar” like some of the other local Harvard Square joints do. You’ll be sure to run into someone with just as much in common if you did not attend the Ivy League. The best part about Grafton Street is the food, while it’s typical Irish pub food it never fails to impress me. I’m left with a full belly and a warm heart when I leave Grafton Street. The service is always excellent during the day and at night, the bartender is always friendly and willing to engage in witty banter. You won’t leave disappointed at Grafton Street. " hide
