  • The Kettle

    Los Angeles
    Diner / New American Restaurant
The Kettle - Diner | New American Restaurant in Los Angeles.
May 28, 2013 American Food - Straight Up "Even with the billions of restaurants in LA, sometimes it can be tough to find genuine, gourmet American food... and sometimes that's all I want! If you feel the same way sometimes, then you don't need to look further than The Kettle. And with it being open 24 hrs/day for 40 years, you could say that The Kettle have the most experience in churning out high quality American food. The Kettle has nothing to hide with it's menu - you get exactly what you order, and with so many options, there is bound to be something for you. Setting: Normally when a restaurant is open 24hrs. a day, the quality tends to decrease a bit. The Kettle would be an exception. Gone are the plastic benches and linoleum that are in most 24 hr. diners - these are replaced with cozy booths and comfortable bar seating along with a pleasant outdoor seating area that typically is covered from the sun. Service is also very excellent, with the wait never taking more than 15 min. the times I've gone. The Scene: This really depends on when you are planning on eating at The Kettle. The Kettle has pretty outstanding breakfast (this is gonna sound like 90% of the reviews, but the muffins really are out of this world) so it tends to be pretty busy. Once summer rolls around, the traffic tends to pick up a bit to because of the convenience to the beach and the type of foods that are served. It also sort of depends on how busy the pier is - if the surrounding restaurants have longer waits, the Kettle usually attracts people looking to be seated sooner. It can get busy during the lunch/dinner rush but it is nothing out of the ordinary. The one warning I will give is going after 10pm or so. Being open 24 hours makes it a popular spot for the late night munchies, and with it being so close to the bars, there can be the occasional drunken groups that head in there looking for a meal. I;ve never seen it get out of hand, but that can be a bit off-putting for some people. Food: The best way to put it is that there is something here for everyone. Obviously, if you are looking for something other than American food, you might want to look somewhere else, but the number of options available is pretty remarkable. 4/5 menu pages are filled with different items, including a designated breakfast menu that is served all day, which is a major plus. Also, gluten-free options are available if you ask your server, which I thought was pretty cool. This isn't really a place to come fro drinks, but there are enough beer and wine options available that you should be able to find something if interested. My review: If I were to compare this place to something, it would be similar to Du-par's or The Pantry (minus the daily specials) in that they serve affordable American food without diminishing the quality like most 24 hr. restaurants. Personally, I would choose The Kettle out of any of those places because of the variety on the menu and it's proximity to the beach. If you are ever down in Hermosa beach and are looking for an easy-access restaurant that is bathing-suit friendly, The Kettle is a great spot. I've lived in Hermosa for a year now and I've easily been to the Kettle more than any restaurant in the area. " hide

  • Underground Pub & Grill

    Los Angeles
British Restaurant / Pub / Sports Bar
Underground Pub & Grill - British Restaurant | Pub | Sports Bar in Los Angeles.
May 28, 2013 Traditional sports bar at its best "Before moving to Hermosa Beach, I had lived in CA for five years and never found a spot that I could regularly go to to watch a sporting event - then came Underground. And it's not just the food, drinks and TVs but the environment as well - people know that Underground is the place to go for sporting events, especially for local teams and MMA/UFC fights. Underground is also great for non-sports fans that are looking for an opportunity to hang out with friends while enjoying traditional bar games like pool, shuffleboard and darts. Setting: Located behind a few other bars/restaurants and near the residential areas, Underground can be somewhat difficult to find for newcomers (just head uphill on 14th St. and it's on your right - you'll hear it). Once inside, however, it should be pretty easy to navigate. It's layout and design are pretty traditional for a sports bar. Scene: No need to get fancy for Underground - most people will be wearing jeans and such. Depending on the night you go and what sporting events are on, the bar can range from busy to straight up rowdy. Underground tends to be the place to go for all UFC/MMA fights and that environment can be pretty intense if you aren't prepared for it. On quieter nights or earlier in the day, the pool tables and dart boards are usually available and service is excellent. Food/Drinks: With this being a typical sports bar, you can anticipate typical sports bar food and drinks. You won't be blown away by anything on the menu, but it is definitely above-average bar food. The sandwich menu has a surprisingly wide range of options (including some of the healthier sandwich options SoCal folks are used to) but the rest of the menu is pretty typical of the area. There is a pretty good selection of draft beer as well, which is usually what I stick with, but all the normal drink options are available. My review: Although Underground is a pretty traditional bar, it does take a certain kind of mood to enjoy it on the busy nights. If you are a die-hard fan and are looking for a place to watch the game without any distractions, this probably isn't the place for you. On the other hand, if you want a place to take all your friends and watch a fight on PPV or an LA Kings game and want the camaraderie, Underground is as good as it gets. Nothing here is going to surprise you, but sometimes that's exactly what you are looking for." hide

  • Shellback Tavern

    Los Angeles
    Dive Bar / Tavern
Shellback Tavern - Dive Bar | Tavern in Los Angeles.
May 28, 2013 The increasingly rare beach bar "This place has been around for years and I'm not sure I can say anything new but this place is definitely worth talking about. Located 50 yards from the ocean and Manhattan Pier, Shellback Tavern is the perfect spot for anyone looking for your traditional beach bar. When I think of a stereotypical beach bar, it's Shellback - which is definitely NOT a bad thing. For some reason, it seems like these bars are a dying breed and it's always nice to know Shellback is around when you need it. Setting: If you are familiar with the area, Shellback is the anti-American Junkie/Baja Sharkeez (or any LA club for that matter). While nightlife mostly involves <30yr olds, Shellback is for anyone looking for a break from thumping house music and cologne. With it's proximity to the beach, many visitors are already in the beach mood, making it very easy to walk up from the sand and come right on in without missing a beat. Depending on your mood, there are booths, tables and bars available to choose from. The crowd tends to be a bit rowdier as you leave the seating area and head towards the back (probably has something to do with the never ending game of flip cup going on back there). It can get loud later in the night, but if you're looking for a place to grab some quick drinks with friends without feeling overwhelmed, this is the spot! Food/Drinks: Shellback is usually known for it's pizza, which is excellent, but there are a number of choices. Whether you are looking for bar food or any California-inspired American dish, there is an option for everyone - and it is all very reasonably priced (2 items over $20). The drinks are standard for any bar and are probably cheaper than what your used to finding in SoCal. Nothing here will blow you away but Shellback isn't just about the food - it's the whole package. The thing about Shellback is that we have all been to a "Shellback." For me, it takes me back to the bars I went to in college and could enjoy a night out for $50. Also, people are in the area to go to the beach and Shellback keeps that vibe going, which is why I give it 4 stars. I'm not saying it's the greatest place ever, but if I were to pick a bar that fits perfectly with its environment, I would choose Shellback. If you are in the area for the beach and want to grab some drinks, I can't recommend Shellback enough. " hide
