  • Burgundy Room

    Dive Bar
Burgundy Room - Dive Bar in Los Angeles.
Apr 11, 2013 Last Punk Rock Dive Bar in Hollywood "My Take: If you’re looking for a true punk rock dive bar experience (think CBGB-esque), then Burgundy Room is for you. Located on Cahuenga, between Hollywood and Sunset, Burgundy has been providing grungy vibes since 1918. It provides a cool meeting place to grab a drink or two with friends, before heading out to one of the neighboring clubs in Hollywood. Upon entering the bar it is almost pitch black aside from a crimson burgundy glow and there is always loud in-your-face punk music blaring. The drinks are stiff and the bartenders are friendly and especially speedy, so you never have to wait too long at the bar. Although it’s not very spacious, it adds more to the funky intimate vibe. Although Burgundy Room will not be everyone’s cup of tea, overall it is truly one of the last real authentic rock-n-roll bars in Hollywood. The Scene: Burgundy Room draws a very diverse crowd. Don’t expect to see any fancy Hollywood A-list stars here, but the bar especially seems to draw a lot of Europeans- tons of Brits! You’ll also find groups of young professionals and a few punk rock indie rockers scattered about. Cocktails & Cuisine: Drinks are always flowing at Burgundy Room and the people that typically come here definitely like to drink. It has a full bar and they even have tall cans. No food here though! Prices: Drinks are a little pricey, but that is to be expected in Hollywood. Beers run for about $8 dollars and mixed drinks are about $6-$8 dollars. What to Wear: No need to dress up to go to this Hollywood bar. Jeans and a t-shirt would have you blend in just fine. You might even want to bust out your leather jacket. There are a few people, however, dressed up a bit nicer that are probably heading to a club later in the night. Insider Info/When to go: Burgundy Room has a very cool old jukebox located by the bathroom that features such punk rock metal classics from the Sex Pistols, Blondie, Misfits, Zeppelin and more! There is also a pretty cool art gallery attached by the entrance of the bar that features awesome local artist work that is worth a peek! " hide

  • Toi on Sunset

    Thai Restaurant / Asian Restaurant
Toi on Sunset - Thai Restaurant | Asian Restaurant in Los Angeles.
Apr 9, 2013 Best Thai Food & Best Atmosphere "My Take: If you take one step inside TOI and take a glance at their décor- your first guess would certainly not be that this was a Thai restaurant. Scattered across the walls are unique paintings of iconic musicians, fascinating artifacts from some of Hollywood’s most famous rock bands, and framed posters from influential hit films (like Pulp Fiction). These eclectic combinations of influences make the restaurant atmosphere unlike anything in LA! The service is super friendly and mimics the rock-n-roll vibe that the restaurant gives off. All of the food is served in huge portions so bring a good group of friends, enjoy some great Thai food, and soak up the great vibes. The Scene: This restaurant is located in Hollywood so you have a lot of diverse locals coming here. TOI generally tends to draw a younger scene (20s and 30 year olds) and is an ideal place to go with a group of friends or would be a fun first date. It can become pretty crowded and rowdy. Cocktails & Cuisine: They have an assortment of traditional Thai dishes to choose from like noodles, seafood, curries and rice. They also offer vegetarian entrees as well. Also, all of their Thai food is cooked with fresh veggies and no MSG or preservatives. Prices: Prices are very reasonable plus the portions are huge! The appetizers range from $9-$12 dollars, TOI specialties are $10-$17 dollars, noodles range from $9-$13 and rice & curries are about $9-$13 bucks. What to Wear: It’s a pretty casual restaurant but remember that it is in Hollywood. I would suggest dressing up a little more trendier than normal. Perhaps even add some rock n’ roll flair and bust out your leather jacket or leather boots! Insider Info: I highly recommend getting the pineapple-fried rice- it was perfect. The texture was sticky but crunchy too, and there was the perfect amount of sweetness from the pineapple. And they also offer free delivery and there is plenty of street parking nearby. " hide

Apr 9, 2013 Vietnamese in Silver Lake "My Take: Gingergrass is a fresh, healthy, and tasty Vietnamese restaurant, located on Glendale Blvd in Silver Lake. The restaurant always seems to be fairly busy (unless it’s early in the day or late at night) and the set up is super casual with tables lined up next to each other and booth options along the walls. I ordered the noodle dumplings with pork and it was delicious. The texture and taste was on point. What I really enjoyed most however, were the assortment of light dipping sauces that they provided with their food. Service is friendly and super laidback adding to the chill atmosphere. Gingergrass is a perfect place to grab a quick casual lunch or dinner in a relaxing and conversational setting. The Scene: Keep in mind you are in Silver Lake- the headquarters for hipsters, so you’ll definitely find your fair share eating here. But there was also quite an eclectic mix of people eating here and most were on dates or big groups of friends. Cocktails & Cuisine: They have noodle bowls, Pho options, salads, and variety of different yummy appetizers and entrees to choose from. Also, the complimentary shrimp pop chips with fish sauce are addicting. Additionally, they have an assortment of decent beers on the menu that you can enjoy with your meal. Prices: Prices are reasonable and to a bit pricey. Appetizers range from $5-$8 dollars, Pho is about $10 bucks, salads run from $14-$16 dollars, noodle bowls are $8-$10 and entrées go from $12-$16 dollars. What To Wear: It’s a pretty casual restaurant, so you can definitely get a way with jeans and a t-shirt. However you will find some people wearing some trendy hipster attire as well. Insider Info: Gingergrass also has a pretty popular and efficient take out option where you can order online. They also serve Intelligentsia coffee, which is always a plus! " hide
