Jun 8, 2013 Tinkerbell on steroids "I was there for the monthly 'A club called Rhonda' night and the DJ's were amazing. If you like deep house and electro and heavy beats, this is the place to be. Everyone is dancing and the get ups are incredible. Think Party Monster- 90's club kids, latex, masks, feathers, chains, crop tops, black lipstick and your hippest hipster outfit. An S&M dungeon meets Tinkerbell on steroids. It does get pretty packed though, and on the way in the line was round the block. If you want to take advantage of the $5 before 10pm then you better make sure that you are actually there well before 10 as the bouncers don't really take into account what time it was when you started standing in the line and there is not much negotiating with them. What is the most annoying thing about this, is that if you are there at that time, once you get in you will realise that the huge club space is pretty empty, making you wonder what exactly the line round the block was all about. By about 1am though, the indoors is heaving and trying to get from the larger downstairs room to upstairs is basically involves being carried along a sea of people. Breathing is also a little hard at this point as it seems that the humidity is at about 95% from so much sweat. Even outside in the back smoking bit was not a great deal better and getting a drink involves a pretty long wait at any of the three ( I think) bars. However, overall though, a fun night. Great, great music, fun crowd and dancing. Best done with a large group of friends or totally on your own in the mood for an adventure. Not a place to go with one other person, you'll spend all night trying not to lose them. Last word of warning - don't be tempted to try and avoid the valet! Parking is a nightmare around that part of Sunset on a Friday/ Saturday night and getting your car ticketed/ towed is gonna work out for a pretty pricey night, much more so than a $10 valet. There are some sneaky no parking past 1am signs in the vicinity which are pretty easy to miss... and on a Saturday night you're gonna have to wait for the next day to get it back... Ouch! " hide

Jun 8, 2013 Secret Tacos and Pineapples "La Esquina one of those places you never forget. From the outside it looks like your average taco joint (and I am already a little biased here as anything that has tequila and tacos in the mix is instantly a winner for me,) but this place is a whole lot more than that. It was one of those NY nights, wondering what exactly is so amazing about NY after all, running around in the LES until someone calls a friend of a friend of someone who knows someone who says they can get you into this cool place, La Esquina. Suddenly you're running through the streets of NY again to then find yourself on the corner of Kenmare and Lafayette facing what looks pretty much like your average taco stand. You're thinking, hmmm interesting, I didn't realise we were at that point in the night already and why on earth to we need guest list to get tacos? Then you are dragged through the door, the person in the know does the talking, the bouncer seems fairly satisfied with the talk and suddenly you are being led through the kitchens with low ceilings, thinking, will we see the light of day again? Are they taking us to the kitchen to murder us? When this clearly illogical internal rambling is interrupted by your stepping o into a clearly very different room, where the music is pumping the margaritas are flowing and tables are decorated with giant bowls of fruit and all of a sudden you realise, this night is going to be just great. You dance the night away and end up at home, much much later with a giant pineapple- I mean the fruit must be there for some reason, right? Definitely a place not to miss." hide

Jun 8, 2013 The best Thursday night you can have. "Hemingway's on a Thursday night is just about my favourite place in LA. They start of with a mix of old skool hip hop which gradually progresses into more mainstream stuff as the night continues and alcohol keeps flowing. The perfect mix to bump and grind to. I was dancing just at the thought of it while still outside in the line. Saying that, i've never experienced a long wait to get in and the bearded door man is actually quite a character and really quite nice... no problems getting in without guestlist. All of this happens with a backdrop of a library/lounge, which makes dancing to hip hop whilst in the heart of Hollywood an even greater experience. I think at some point everyone is tempted to try and pull the books off the bookshelf only to find that they are glued in. Probably just as well as there wouldn't be any left and the library look gives this place so much of its character. Tuesday is also pretty awesome, and actually on this night I did RSVP. Totally different vibe, it is a live bands night, where you get to see bands on a residency as well as fresh new sounds. The selection I saw were all pretty good and ranging from rock to folkier. Again found myself dancing around the room, although the audience on this night was generally a lot tamer and were possibly looking at me dancing a little strangely. If you do feel like a bit of a chillout, you can also head into the smoking lounge section and gather some strength before making it back onto the dancefloor. Hemingway's is actually open pretty late by LA standards although they stop serving at 2am. Thursday is definitely a winner though, mostly LA locals, with few tourists. Busy enough to be fun without being so rammed that people are pushing you and stepping on your toes." hide
