  • Jameson's Irish Pub

    Los Angeles
Irish Pub / Restaurant / Sports Bar
Jameson's Irish Pub - Irish Pub | Restaurant | Sports Bar in Los Angeles.
Sep 18, 2013 Cheap beer near Hollywood & Highland "Since Dillon's closed a few months ago, I have been searching all around Hollywood for a replacement "Irish" bar. Note the quotes: Jameson's is about as genuinely Irish as Leonardo DiCaprio in Gangs of New York. Just because there are shamrocks hanging on the wall and the name is that of a certain popular whiskey, you shouldn't expect to come here to watch a rugby or Gaelic rules match, or even an English soccer game for that matter. Since this is more of a tourist bar, you won't get the dark musty vibes or scent of crippling alcoholism that you find in a legitimate pub. What you do get is a lively atmosphere with tasty, reasonably priced food and some cheap drinks. Their 2-for-1 happy hour runs until 8pm and they always have a beer of the month on tap for only $2.75 a pint. If you're looking for a good bar near central Hollywood to spend the day watching football with friends without breaking the bank, Jameson's is the spot for you." hide

The Baked Potato (Studio City, CA) - Jazz Club | Live Music Venue in Los Angeles.
Aug 28, 2013 Historic jazz in the shadow of Universal City "A good friend has been trying to get me out to see his jazz outfit - The Urban Renewal Project - for the last few months. Since they normally play a good distance away from my Hollywood home (be it Sherman Oaks, Santa Monica, or Hermosa Beach), I haven't been able to make it yet. Last Sunday they had a show at the Baked Potato. Not only was this a venue I had been meaning to check out since discovering it on a walk down Cahuenga after a late night at the Hat, it was a right up the street from me. No amount of excuses would get me out of this one, and boy am I glad I went. Compared to other jazz clubs in the city like the Blue Whale, the Potato's decor is anything but modern. Wood paneling, small tables and an old wooden bar tucked away in the corner let you know that you're stepping into a piece of history as soon as you enter the door. The room is quite small, but the size all but eliminates the need for any sort of amplification, especially for my friend's 13-piece brass band. Despite the size of the room, the sound never becomes overpowering, and the clusters of tables are filled with smiling concert-goers - some simply tapping their feet while taking in the music being made only feet away, some unable to resist the urge to get up and shake it every so often. Every face in the room had a smile on. It may have been the music or it may have been the venue, but either way it added up to a fun night of jazz off the 101." hide

  • Tchaikovsky Fireworks Spectacular

Tchaikovsky Fireworks Spectacular - Symphony | Concert | Outdoor Event in Los Angeles.
    Aug 21, 2013
"I bought tickets to the Tchaikovsky Fireworks Spectacular as an anniversary present, and my girlfriend and I walked up to the Bowl from our apartment in Hollywood this past Saturday. Upon arriving, the crowd of people milling about, gradually making their way through security and up the hill to their seats showed us that this is an LA tradition that many hold dear. Everywhere we looked there were groups of different compositions and demographics - a family of 5, an elderly couple on their 20th Summer at the show, a group of young teens eager to see the explosive finale that was promised to us all. Everyone was excited to be there, and the energy of the crowd could be felt everywhere. Even though our seats were near the back, we had a great view of the stage. As more and more people settled in and we finished a picnic of a variety of Gelson's prepared food and wine, the LA Philharmonic began their warm-up and the conductor made his walk to the podium. What followed was a series of movements and pieces from Tchaikovsky's prolific career, ending in the dramatic fanfare that is the 1812 Overture. As the last crescendos began, so too did the pyrotechnic display from behind the stage, and the entire crowd watched as fireworks shot hundreds of feet into the air, illuminating the audience, as well as the surrounding valley. As the last note hit and the last firework exploded overhead, the conductor took his bow to raucous applause and walked off-stage to a standing ovation. After that night, this is definitely a Los Angeles tradition I will be taking part in for a long time." hide
