  • Glascott's Groggery

    Chicago
Historic Bar / Irish Pub / Restaurant
Glascott's Groggery - Historic Bar | Irish Pub | Restaurant in Chicago.
Dec 7, 2012 Standard Irish Pub with a little more history...and skeeball! "In many ways Glascott's is just another Irish Pub in Chicago, but its history gives it authenticity that all the other copycats can't match. It's been around for 4 generations of the family and it looks and feels like a 1930's era bar in many ways. It may not have all the amenities of some bars but it feels more real. I love the huge windows looking out on to the street and the whole place feels authentic. Plus they have skeeball and pool in the back! Located in Lincoln Park near DePaul, weekends at Glascott's are very college-y with a young crowd looking to get drunk and hook up (as they should). There are often private parties in the back room with birthdays happening every weekend. For food they have a partnership with the Athenian Room and so you get an Irish Pub with Irish beers and Greek food. But it also means you get really good Greek food and was a great idea. The beer selection is relatively standard but they know how to pour a Guinness correctly and the prices are reasonable - no beer is over $5 which is refreshing to see. The staff is pretty friendly and there is a family vibe to the place, worth checking out if you are in the area but not one to go out of your way to visit as well." hide

  • Martyrs'

    Chicago
    Bar / Live Music Venue
Martyrs' - Bar | Live Music Venue in Chicago.
Dec 7, 2012 Great Venue, great bands, cheap shows "Martyrs is a great place to see a small show and is really just a bar with a stage more than a true concert venue. But they bring in a lot fun bands, often on the folk/jam/roots-rock side of things as well as tribute bands including Tributosaurus who does a different tribute each month or so and nail it. They also host the Moth StorySLAM and just about any night of the week you will see a live performance and rarely pay more than $10. Highlight for me was seeing ALO play here and a good-sized crowd packed in for an awesome show and the acoustics are also very solid for this setup. Outside of the music they actually have a pretty good whiskey selection and some really good specialty pizzas (smoked ham and fig). Beer selection is decent with a few drafts outside of your standard like Half Acre and some Bells and a few good bottles as well. The crowd and vibe matches the shows but it tends to be a friendly, unpretentious group of music lovers. More dudes than dudettes most nights but you will find yourself in conversations with strangers every time and sometimes even with the band after the show. A lot of the local acts will open for a band and then just be in the crowd for the show itself which is pretty cool as well. The bands seem to enjoy the intimacy of the venue and always put on a great show. If you know a band playing at Martyrs' you must check it out. Chances are you won't know any bands but you should still check it out whether a tribute band, the Moth, or just any show." hide

  • Café Ba-Ba-Reeba

    Chicago
    Spanish Restaurant / Tapas Bar
Café Ba-Ba-Reeba - Spanish Restaurant | Tapas Bar in Chicago.
Dec 7, 2012 Great tapas and fun, lively atmosphere "Although I am not a tapas expert, Ba-Ba-Reeba is may favorite tapas spot in Chicago. They've got the standard solid sangria and a bunch of good spanish wines and some excellent paella but really the pintxos and tapas steal the show. My personal favorites include the beef empanadas, bacon-wrapped dates, goat cheese in tomato sazuse, the 4 kinds of spanish sausages, and the cheese plates. As you can tell I am no vegetarian but this is a great spot for groups including vegetarians to eat as there are a ton of options. I'm also told the seafood is very good though I haven't partaken. The atmosphere is lively and a mix of groups of friends and couples of all ages in the evenings as well as for brunch but also some families as well. The line can be very long on the weekends even with reservations some times. For some reason large groups will show up without a reservation and the front area and sidewalk will fill up with people waiting. But once sat it is great for groups, as most tapas is, for all the sharing options. Order 2 or 3 plates each. I usually order 2 to share and beef empanadas just for me. A few pitchers of sangria and you are setting yourself up for a great night. The bars nearby are mostly DePaul/Lincoln Park college bars, for better or for worse, I like the Marquee lounge that is caddy-corner (kitty-corner?) on Halsted but The Store has pop-a-shot basketball and Beaumont is right there as well on Halsted. Great tapas, solid sangria, and always fun if you don't have to wait too long. " hide
