"I saw Kiev for the second time last night at the first night of their free August Monday night residency at The Bootleg, and all I can say is that this band never ceases to amaze me. They groove hard! Pinning down a genre is tricky with Kiev, but picture a jazzy, jammy Radiohead (especially vocally) and you can start to get an idea of what the Orange County five-piece sound like. The tunes are funky enough to slink around to, but intricate enough that you can enjoy sitting back and letting the sound wash over you just as easily. Having recently wrapped up sessions for their debut album, the band was eager to debut some killer new material (which they’ll be doing all month), but they also threw a few of the fan favorites that they’ve been playing for years into their hour-long set. All the while, they maintained a light atmosphere with plenty of banter between songs and even came back out to appease an encore-hungry crowd with a quick jam at the end of the night. Do yourself a favor and check out Kiev on a Monday night this August, it’s free so you really have nothing to lose, and you’ll be glad you did!" hide

    Portugal. The Man

"I saw Portugal. The Man at The Wiltern in Los Angeles last Friday, and all that I can say is “Wow!” I’m not sure what I was expecting, but they completely blew all of my expectations out of the water with an excellent performance and some top-notch stage production. The Alaskan psychedelic indie band played much of this year’s Danger Mouse-produced Evil Friends, a record that I have been listening to constantly since it came out last month, as well as a nice smattering of songs from their extensive back catalogue (Seriously, how do they already have 8 albums?). They rounded out their set with “Day Man,” Dennis and Charlie’s song from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and a few Beatles covers and outros, including a rocking “Helter Skelter” during the encore. Psychedelic images were projected across the entire stage onto a simple white mountain-shaped backdrop throughout the performance, covering the band and giving the set a feeling similar to what I’ve only seen in pictures from the peak of the San Francisco psychedelic scene decades ago. Sonically, Portugal. The Man sounded even better than on Evil Friends, faithfully recreating even the most complicated of sounds organically with an openness and warmth not heard on Spotify through my headphones. Performances like theirs are exactly why I love live music." hide
