  • The Otheroom

    Los Angeles
Bar / Lounge / Wine Bar
A packed house at The Otheroom in Los Angeles.
Aug 11, 2013 The Trendiest in Trendy Venice "Abbott Kinney is, quite possibly, the trendiest street in Los Angeles. Small and one-off boutiques, flannel shirts and combed hair galore, and hole-in-the-wall chic bars all make this area of Venice the epitome of trend. The Otheroom is the IT place to be on Abbott Kinney. The 'cool-factor' is pretty off the scale. The place is dimly lit, and gives off an industrial, brick and mortar vibe. There are plenty of nooks to sit at, and a large free space in front of the bar so no one is squished. Drinks here run a bit expensive, but nothing too obscene. $6-9 for a beer and $7-12 for mixed drinks is just about right for where the bar is: in the heart of Venice Beach. The beer selection is spot on. With roughly 16 taps that constantly change, they really did well at balancing beer types to please every beer drinker. Pilsners, Hefeweizens, Amber Ales, IPAs, and a few Porters were on tap last time I was there. They cater to the selective beer drinker The dress was pretty relaxed. A button down flannel and jeans, or a blouse and skirt are usually what I see there. I never feel like I'm underdressed there. Music usually includes indie standards, nothing too out there. It usually hangs in the background. I would recommend The Otheroom for all sorts of occasions. Wether you are grabbing a drink with a friend/significant other, or looking to hang with all your buddies, or to pick up someone single, this is a great bar for all of those things. If you're looking for a cool new place to drink, go check out The Otheroom!" hide

  • BBC Proms: Classical Music Festival

    London

BBC Proms: Classical Music Festival - Music Festival in London.
    Aug 11, 2013
"As an American, I could have never expected a standing-room only Classical Music concert on a Friday night to be SOLD OUT! The BBC Proms: Classical Music Festival is a wonderful exploration of classical music styles that is aimed at educating the audience. I attended the German Classical Night, featuring pieces from Beethoven, Mozart, and Bach. A two hour concert showcasing some of the greatest German musicians in history was packed to the brim, which shocked me. Did I mention that it was packed to the brim, with YOUNG PEOPLE! The youth was out in force for this one. A packed crowd of twenty-somethings stood listening to amazing baroque and classical concert, by their own volition. The price was right, and the crowd loved it. I bought a £10 ticket to enter for the general admission standing space. As I walked into the Royal Albert Hall, up to the large, rotund standing space, it looked more like concerts in the park than a classical concert at a world renowned venue. Couples had set up blankets and had some snacks. Attendees bought beer and wine there and sat and drank it amongst friends. This was not the scene I had expected at all, but loved it all the more. As I stated before, this event was meant to educate. The price of the tickets are kept incredibly low as to have a turn out like the one I described. Any classical music event can charge plenty and get some old stuffy's to fill the seats. But Proms aims to draw the young crowd, as to get some good music appreciation going. This was an acceptable Friday event to attend for young adults, and so the event was a success. I recommend, if you wind-up in London, try to see one night of Proms. The price is so right, and the buzz about it is justified. I experienced excellent classical music at a cheap rate, and everyone there loved being there. The atmosphere of the concert goers was so laid-back, it was not your grandmothers' Bach. The atmosphere was also respectful, just like one would expect at a classical show. If I had a choice of how to experience classical music, I would choose the BBC Proms every time!" hide

Aug 11, 2013 Up Scale Beach Bummin "One block up from pristine beach is the local feel good spot called Simmzy's. If I could describe this place in one word, it would be 'refreshing'. The open-air restaurant catches the light sea breezes and keeps the atmosphere fresh. The Simmzy's Mimosa is the perfect post-morning-beach-bike ride treat, and the Simmzy's Burger is large, filling, juicy, and delicious. Thin cut fries, delicate sweet potato fries, and dipping sauces extending far beyond ketchup are perfect sides to any meal there. The atmosphere is always lively. Close tables and background rock music keep the place buzzing. The decor of the place is comfortable and mellow, even though the place is packed. There is often a long-ish wait to be seated, which builds appetite and thirst in good ways! Everyone can feel the good vibes. The beer selection is extremely extensive. The people behind the bar are very knowledgeable about beer, and they can recommend anything for any taste preference. The chalkboard on which the beer list is written is constantly changing, which lets you know Simmzy's is all about exploring craft beer. The attire is, again, pretty relaxed. There are young professionals in for lunch wearing shorts and polos, as well as flowing, loose beach dresses. This place is comfortable for any dress. This is not a divey beach bum establishment, so shoes and shirts are required, but if your feet are still sandy from enjoying the beach, sandals make it all good. The prices reflect the town and the atmosphere: $5-8 for beer, $8-14 for a meal. Overall, if you are downtown in Manhattan Beach and want a nice near ocean meal, go here! The food is great, the beer is unique, the people are relaxed, and the energy is ecstatic. On a nice, lazy beach day, go to Simmzy's to check out the locals and enjoy some excellent eats 'n drinks!" hide
