  • Hospoda

    New York
    Bar / Restaurant
Hospoda - Bar | Restaurant in New York.
Jan 5, 2013 Czech This Out "THE SCENE: Hospoda is a Czech restaurant in the Czechoslovakian Consulate on a neighborhood street on the Upper East side. It's one of New York's more visually stimulating restaurants as wood carvings on the wall light up to provide a one-of-a-kind dining experience. The bar is set up as communal European style table, but the scene is more focused on the excellent food and drinks with the meal. THE CROWD: Because it is somewhat pricey, the crowd tends to be older, more professional, and often times, quite European given the obvious appeal to Czech workers in the building. VIBE: Sleek, refined, European. Hospoda is all about the great food and great drinks with the food. DÉCOR: As nice as Hospoda is from the inside, it is particularly beautiful at night from the outside. The slightly subdued lighting causes the hand-carved drawings in the wood walls to light up in a psychodelic display of high-priced art. The floor has a see-through section where patrons can look through and see the alcohol storage area below. High-priced wood floors, tables, and chairs give the restaurant a particularly classy and refined feel. ENTERTAINMENT: The entertainment is the food and the Czech beer that, sometimes loud, patrons indulge in on a regular basis. FOOD: Although it is relatively new and in an inconspicuous location, Hospoda's food is among the city's best. Traditional Czech dishes like veal schnitzel compliment a seasonal menu that includes duck, scallops, steak, fish and organic vegetables. The desserts are prepared by one of the world's renowned pastry chefs and make a trip from any part of the city worthwhile alone. The czech pancakes are extremely popular. WHAT TO WEAR: Casual to business attire appropriate. " hide

  • Sojourn

    New York
    American Restaurant / Bar
Sojourn - American Restaurant | Bar in New York.
Jan 5, 2013 Good Spot on UES "THE SCENE: Sojourn’s entrance is distinct with its prominent awning and white sheets reminiscent of South Beach blowing in the 79th Street wind. Patrons walk through an apartment building hallway before entering through a thick wooden door that brings them into this popular wine bar. The original copper bar is always packed, but not uncomfortably so, as is the dining room, which features a chef’s table that seats approximately 20 people. Sojourn has become one of the Upper East Side’s most reliable hot spots with well-priced high quality food and drinks. It’s a popular first-date spot but also has a vibrant “singles scene.” THE CROWD: Sojourn has a distinctly local crowd, although more and more who travel from other parts of the city to try the increasingly well-known menu. Owner Sam is at the bar everyday and knows most of the regulars personally. Some of New York’s top NYPD brass are also regulars, and there are a few celebs who have been known to hang out there as well. Patrons tend to be 30s and up. VIBE: Very relaxed and unpretentious. The setting is romantic but not cheesy. The staff, including Julio and Mike at the bar, remember your favorites. This is the place for many Upper East siders where everybody knows your name. DÉCOR: Dark ambient lighting with hand carved wood, including hand-made wooden tables, throughout. ENTERTAINMENT: Live music every Monday and Tuesday night. FOOD: The menu is eclectic with a touch of Mexican, Asian, Italian, French, and American. Many of the dishes feature truffle sauce, including the salmon and ravioli. The skirt steak with fried rice is also a favorite, as are Kobe beef sliders and hand-cut fries with Sojourn special ginger-infused ketchup. For dessert, the cheesecake is regarded as one of the best in the city. WHAT TO WEAR: Casual but anything from t-shirts to a suit goes. HOT NIGHTS: You are hard-pressed to find a night when Sojourn doesn’t have an energetic feel to it. Mondays and Tuesdays are live music, and Wednesday through Saturdays are usually packed late into the night. KEY TIPS: Order a martini from Mike and watch as the last drop from the sidecar just ever so slightly goes over the top of the glass. For parties, call Sam and ask about the chef’s table special.
