Mar 28, 2013 Go check this place out and don't be intimidated by the online descriptions! "After having a long conversation about Boston's rising imbibe culture, some friends and I decided to go to Hawthorne on a whim. We were by no means prepared for the classy, upscale atmosphere (I had on ripped pants and a sweater, my boyfriend wore a jean vest covered in punk patches and buttons) but nonetheless we were treated with the utmost kindness and respect from the hostesses and bartenders. I was sure we would at the least receive scoffs and weird looks from the glamorous and well-dressed patrons, but that didn't happen either. Recalling the scene, I am still blown away. The art and decor is impeccable: the perfect mix of 60's mod/ art house and old-school Harvard (think hip San Francisco meets collegiate Boston). The formal yet comfortable vibe ensues. Even though we were fine in jeans, I definitely suggest dressing up. Be creative though, the formality of the space is equally balanced by the funky/artistic vibe. The most impressive part of Hawthorne though, was the bartender. Fortunately we were one of three larger parties there so he had the time to talk to us about his craft. He gave us all free shots of Fernet and tastes of various other components of our drinks (Cointreau and Chartreuse perhaps? Or was it Carpo Antica?) Whatever they were, it was very kind, and everything was delicious and reasonably priced. He even went so far as to give us his business card incase we had any further questions about craft cocktails, etc. I wish I hadn't lost it so I could recommend him. Alas, but I can say go check this place out and don't be intimidated by the online descriptions! " hide

Brendan Behan's Pub - Bar | Irish Pub in Boston.
Mar 28, 2013 If the grey skies and fluctuating temperatures are testing your love of New England, go to the Behan for a little reminder of why this place is actually pretty cool. "Whenever I think of the Behan I am filled with the warm, nostalgic sentiments one prescribes only to their most frequented hometown pub. 70's punk artist Jonathon Richman describes it best, "I've already been to Paris, I already been to Rome and what did I do but miss my home? I have been out west to Californ' but I miss the land where I was born. I can't help it." The Behan is the quintessence of the New England bar: dim, cheap, mahogany, Irish, apathetically welcoming, and a little rough around the edges. The bartenders are efficient and kind-- always down to have a chat if you find yourself desperate for a beer on a slow Tuesday night. The crowd is a diverse amalgamation of local punks and artists, young professionals, and older JP natives. The atmosphere emits absolutely no hostility or judgement and I mean it when I say everyone will feel welcome. The beer is cheap and the cocktails are usually pretty good and alcoholic (which I actually really appreciate considering the watery juice I am served at Charlie's). They don't serve food, but if you get the munchies just go across the street for some cheap chinese or pizza (Food Wall and Nemo's are both open until 1 or 2am) and bring it back to the bar. If the grey skies and fluctuating temperatures are testing your love of New England, go to the Behan for a little reminder of why this place is actually pretty cool. " hide
