Speedway Sonoma (Sonoma, CA) Information

Speedway Sonoma, an intricate 2.52-mile road course and drag strip in the southern Sonoma Mountains at Sears Point, is a supremely challenging course that traverses the hills in a series of twists and turns.

Boasting 720 acres, the road-racing course was constructed by Marin County owners Robert Marshall Boas Jr. and land developer Jim Coleman of Kentfield, and held its first official event on December 1, 1968 with the SCCA Enduro.

Currently, Speedway Sonoma has a seating capacity of 47,000, which includes the grandstands and terraces that surround the track. Additional tents and stages are erected for big races, raising the capacity to 102,000. 2004 marked a major expansion for the raceway, resulting in 10,000 permanent grandstand seats, 64,000 hillside seats, 100 acres of restored wetlands, a wastewater treatment facility, a go-kart track, and a new drag strip.

NASCAR races at Speedway Sonoma are one of only five national races each year that are run on road courses, and also hosts amateur or club racing events that may or may not be open to the public.
