California Memorial Stadium (Berkeley, CA) Information

California Memorial Stadium (Berkeley, CA) - Stadium in San Francisco.

California Memorial Stadium is a picturesque outdoor football stadium on the campus of The University of California in Berkeley, serving as the home field for the Golden Bears. The venue opened in 1923, seating 71,799 fans until 2010 when the three-phase, $321-million renovations began. Games at the California Memorial Stadium are mostly reserved for the Golden Bears.

Due to the Hayward Fault passing directly beneath the playing field, almost perfectly from one end zone to the other, it was decided that seismic renovations had to be made to ensure the structure’s safety, following a 2008 study that announced the potential hazardous dangers posed by the way the Stadium was constructed.

Boasting sweeping views of Berkeley Hills and Strawberry Canyon, Memorial Stadium was originally funded from public contributions as a memorial to Californians who lost their lives in World War I. John Galen Howard headed up the architectural committee responsible for the structure and its neoclassical aesthetic. In 2006, the stadium was listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

Welcome to the Bears' Home Turf

Disclaimer: I'm a California Golden Bear so this review will be biased. California Memorial Stadium is home to the California Golden Bears football team since 1923. Just walking up the steps, you can feel the decades of history that the stadium has to offer--both on and off the field. After the stadium was retrofitted in 2011 and re-opened for the 2012 season, you can tell that it was given an update but the look and the feel of it is true to its original form. We now have two jumbotrons when in the past, it was only one and some lights were burnt out in the middle. There's gold lettering along the scoreboard and we have scoreboards on all sides now! We have come a long, long way since the tree sitters were protesting this entire project. Some tips for those unfamiliar with Bear Territory: 1. Do not wear red. I repeat: Do. Not. Wear. Red. 2. Like all college football stadiums, there is no alcohol sold or allowed on site. 3. Food options have been upgraded! In 2012 I saw BBQ pulled pork sandwiches and Top Dog! 4. Quiet down on offense (even if that guy in front of you is wearing a Stanfurd hat). 5. Go Bears!
