April Fool's Dash Description

April Fool's Dash - Running | Sports in San Francisco.

Appropriately taking place on April 1st every year, April Fool’s Dash is a 5K and 10K race in San Francisco where participants “chase” jesters throughout the route in order to win entry tickets for a raffle held at the race’s end.

Organized by Picnic Dash Productions – who create non-profit running events in SF – the April Fool’s Dash benefits Leap, a local organization that strives to enhance art programs in elementary and middle schools in SF.

The April Fool’s Dash race route usually begins at the Black Point Battery in Fort Mason, where volunteers in striped socks and jester caps get a head start before the remaining participants take off after them, winding through the Marina’s Aquatic Park and the beach-side expanse of Crissy Field before returning to the Battery for snacks, drinks, and awards.

10K participants begin at 11am and the 5K group starts about ten minutes later. The cost of the April Fool’s day race is $20–$25 in advance and $25–$30 on the day of the race (bring cash if registering day of!). All participants receive a 20%-off coupon from the Sports Basement sporting goods store on Bryant Street as part of their pre-race packet.

Although special prizes are awarded to the top three finishers in each category and some group participants are known to get a little competitive, most runners are not there to display their athletic prowess or win glorious prizes, but instead to enjoy a fun afternoon and to contribute money to a worthy cause.

And yes, despite the date, April Fool’s Dash is a very real race in SF.
