SF Dates on the Cheap...Without Feeling Cheap

SF Dates on the Cheap...Without Feeling Cheap

Jun 15, 2012 —  Newsflash: San Francisco is expensive.
Equally Obvious Newsflash: San Francisco’s initials are S-F.

The notion that the lovely City by the Bay ain’t easy on the pocketbook is hardly an earth-shattering idea. No matter the subject – rent, food, gas, biodegradable sex toys – everything tends to pummel the national average when it comes to the price tag.

Sure, you probably don’t have to drive everyday given the city’s compact size, but when you do, good luck figuring out all the parking regulation signs: Street cleaning 12:03 am to 6:37 am, holidays excluded, parades included, blackout dates below, M–W unless noted, 10:22 am to half past the full moon of Endor’s daylight savings…

No wonder locals budget several hundred dollars a year for parking tickets.

But does that mean you just give up? Curl into a ball with your pint of balsamic strawberry from Bi-Rite and catch up on Planet Earth reruns? Not tonight! Because we’ve got a list of some fun date options from San Francisco parks to SF bars and unique neighborhood landmarks, and none will commit hara-kiri on the credit card.

You know you’ve been trying to come up with an excuse to ask out that girl from work or the cute boy from softball since you first laid eyes on them.

NightLife at the California Academy of Sciences

Culture / Drinking Activity / Event Space / Museum

NightLife at the California Academy of Sciences - Culture | Drinking Activity | Event Space | Museum in San Francisco.
Why: Because it’s on Thursday nights, which makes it a lot less committing than a weekend date. And because you can sip cocktails while staring at rare fish, roaming through a rainforest, and listening to DJs.
Last Word: “Being a nerd never looked so cool.”

    Chinatown

Culture / Nightlife Area / Outdoor Activity / Shopping Area

Chinatown - Culture | Nightlife Area | Outdoor Activity | Shopping Area in San Francisco.
Why: Because if you avoid the kitsch that dominates Grant Street – opt for the pedestrian-only passageway of Ross Alley instead – Chinatown offers a stunning array of people-watching, unique stores, and restaurants bursting with exotic food. And because you can pay a card reader to tell your date that they made a wise decision.
Last Word: “I’ll bet you a second date I can eat the whole thing.”

    Toad Hall

    Gay Bar / Gay Club

Toad Hall - Gay Bar | Gay Club in San Francisco.
Why: Because fun, friendly, and unpretentious gay bars are a great place for would-be couples, regardless of sexual orientation, to get to know one another. And because drinks are cheap, the music is fun, and the wedding day stories you tell about your first date will be faaaaaaaaabulous!
Last Word: “First dates are gay.”

    Amélie

Bistro / Lounge / Wine Bar

Amélie - Bistro | Lounge | Wine Bar in San Francisco.
Why: Because it’s a sexy San Francisco wine bar with lots of budget-friendly bottles on the menu, delicious small plates, and an international band of European regulars right down to the proudly French owner. And because nothing inspires notions of love like stories of Paris paired with a few pinots.
Last Word: “You show me your Paris, I’ll show you my Naples.”

    Specs’ 12 Adler Museum Café

    Dive Bar

Specs’ 12 Adler Museum Café - Dive Bar in San Francisco.
Why: Because this ridiculous hodgepodge of a dive in the heart of North Beach looks like it was decorated by a hurricane, with everything from animal bones to mummies to vintage newspaper clippings tagged to the walls. And because the diverse décor combined with an equally diverse clientele combined with ubiquitously cheap booze will always give you plenty to talk about.
Last Word: “If you think this place is cool, you should see the INSERT RANDOM ITEM collection I have at my apartment!”

    …yeah, maybe avoid that one.

Paul Feinstein Jul 27, 2012 Nightlife at the California Academy of Sciences is hands down the coolest thing to do in SF. If you're in the city - and it's Thursday - go.
sgunther Jul 27, 2012 I agree - Chinatown in SF can be like stepping out of SF and straight into China. Eye-opening, great people-watching, and definitely inexpensive.
Paula Peña Jul 27, 2012 Speaking of Chinatown - go to Delicious Dim-Sum, it's SO GOOD and RIDICULOUSLY CHEAP. I was so full after eating there and spent a grand total of $2.50 dollars.
