Party Earth Mad Dog In The Fog Review

The Scene

Mad Dog In The Fog in San Francisco’s Lower Haight is a sports pub with tons of beer & dedication to soccer. Catch a guy fake an injury in SF with Party Earth.

Located several blocks down from the patchouli-scented paradise of the Upper Haight, where it shares a block packed with everything from punk dives to casual wine bars, Mad Dog In The Fog is a lively neighborhood pub with tons of beer, a diehard devotion to soccer, and regular trivia nights that are the stuff of legend.

The long front room touts a regularly occupied pool table up front and, running down the exposed brick wall, leather booths that accommodate eager sports fans with their eyes on the flat-screens and young after-partiers soothing their hangovers with much-needed greasy grub.

The bar dominates the other side, leading past a retro English telephone booth to a cozy outdoor patio clad with beer signs, where expats and footie followers sling brews from the 150+-bottle selection and hash out who’s destined to win the next World Cup.

The raucous crowds that fill the place on any big game day – including major Niners and Giants games – are often matched by the trivia nights on Tuesdays and Thursdays, when anyone who shows up at the 9pm start will find the place so full they’ll have to use someone’s back as a writing surface.

Regular DJs round out the weekend, making Mad Dog In The Fog a popular haunt for everyone from avid sports fans to quiz queens to hungry Haight barhoppers with big time party GOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAALLLLLLLSSSSS!!!!!!

Tip from Lucas:

Major soccer matchups mean Mad Dog opens early – as in 5am sometimes – so make plans to get in some serious day drinking on European time. And it’s wise to head in at least an hour-and-a-half before a big game if you want any chance of scoring a seat.

  • Crowd

Soccer hounds, yuppies, frat boys, groups of friends, blue-collar guys, local professionals, older expats, 20s to 60+.

  • Entertainment / Music

DJs on most weekends. Bartender’s playlist. Several flat-screens more than likely tuned to a soccer match.

    Pool table.

  • Food / Miscellaneous

Pub grub menu including burgers, fries, salads, and tacos.

    Outdoor patio.

  • Prices

    Starters $4.50–$9, breakfast items $4–$9.50, tacos $9, salads $5–$9. Beer $5–$24+, wine $6.50–$8.50/glass or $24–$32/bottle.

  • What to Wear / Dress Code

Casual: sports jerseys, jeans, shorts, flannel, granny jumpers, dresses.

  • Hot Nights / When to Go

Any time a soccer match of interest is on, Tuesdays and Thursdays for the popular trivia nights, or Fridays and Saturdays for a buzzing stop on a Haight Street barhopping tour.

  • Close By

Rosamunde Sausage Grill (545 Haight Street) is located just across the road and is a great spot to grab a bite if Mad Dog is crazy busy or if there’s a lull in the game.

A neighborhood favorite

After living in the Lower Haight for seven months, it is safe for me to say that out of all the amazing bars, Mad Dog in the Fog is the one that I frequent the most. Thursday nights is a great night for trivia, just be prepared to come early for a seat and stay late. The trivia master is a Scottish man with a booming voice so he is easily heard throughout the packed bar. Winners are rewarded a pitcher for their competence, and second and third place are also awarded prizes for their efforts. People from all over the city come to Mad Dog to try their luck at trivia. For March Madness, this is the go-to bar. Fans get decked out in gear and gather around the booths to cheer on their alma maters. The atmosphere is laid back and inviting. I can also count on Mad Dog for the safe environment and the friendly patrons. I would definitely recommend the bar to any friend visiting the city or craving a change from their normal neighborhood bar.
All around great

This is a super unique place. You would never think that a bar has good breakfast, but this place steals the cake in that department. Drinks and snacks vary from cheap to pretty pricey, but that also goes up in quality so it's worth it. I use to come here a lot, I haven't in a while, but I totally miss it. The best times spent here have been on game days. No matter if it's soccer, football, or baseball it is always popping in this bar and not in a bad way. Some pubs can get really chaotic and dangerous, but I have always had a great time here on game days and continue to go back.
