Bimbo's 365, is one of the oldest nightclub sites in San Francisco, tucked between Fisherman’s Wharf and Russian Hill. The theatre holds 685 theater-style seats or 475 for dinner.
The story goes that Agostino "Bimbo" Giuntoli, a kid born in Tuscany, began working as a janitor at the Palace Hotel before trying his chops as a cook. Monk Young, Bimbo’s boss, couldn’t pronounce his name properly, so he just called called him bimbo, Italian for boy, and the name stuck.
The first location of the 365 Club was on Market Street in 1931. Bimbo managed it and Young owned it. The club was a full-blown speakeasy and after-hours gambling club, and quickly became one the most popular, and illicit, nightclubs in town.
A young Rita Hayworth even made it to the stage in one of the original chorus lines.
In 1950, Bimbo bought another nightclub, Bal Tabarin, located where the current Bimbo 365 still resides. Rumor has it he bought it for $100,000, about $966,000 with inflation.
Twenty years later, Bimbo finally retired, and for the next 18 years, the building was largely closed, opened only on a rental basis for private parties.
Michael Cerchiai, Bimbo’s grandson, reopened the property as a full-blown nightclub in 1988. Recent corporate clients holding events at Bimbo’s 365 include everyone from Yahoo! and Oracle to the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences.
Performances at Bimbo’s 365 have included artists such as Macy Gray, Jewel, Chris Isaak, Robbie Williams and The Brian Setzer Orchestra.
