Amoeba Music (Berkeley, CA) Information

Indie music chain Amoeba Music has stores in San Francisco and Hollywood, but its original location is in Berkeley on Telegraph Avenue.

Open since 1990, the large store stocks music, movies, and comics, as well as hard-to-find titles coveted by aficionados. As one of the granddaddies of the 90s vinyl boom, Amoeba has a cult following, and visitors from around the world show up to revel in the rebellious, artistic vibe that extends to the revolution-celebrating “People’s Park” mural on the side of the building.

The Berkeley store is open every day for the perusing pleasure of High Fidelity-type hipsters. All genres you can think of, and some you may not have heard about, are represented in the store’s stock.

Amoeba Music (selectively!) buys used music, and students receive a 10% discount on all purchases. The store also serves as an occasional performance venue. As the smallest of the three Amoeba locations, the Berkeley store does not get as many shows, but shows at Amoeba Music have included regular appearances by indie darlings Tegan and Sara, Dengue Fever, and Minus the Bear.

The Perfect Place for a Store Like This
Trevor R. Feb 5, 2013
Amoeba Music is an embodiment of the ideals of the city of Berkeley, Ca. A quirky, heterogeneous, intelligent record store with loads of character. Amoeba Music on Telegraph, the first of 3 Amoeba stores around California, has a massive selection of records, CDs, DVDs and posters for competitive prices. Built out of mutual love of music from the employees and the patrons of Berkeley, this record store has evolved in to more of a music community. With occasional live performances and a music collection that boasts some of the most celebrated artists of the last 100 years, Amoeba is a must- do for any music, or Berkeley culture fan. The employees all have a love for music and are knowledgable and helpful. They'll let you browse at your own will, or they'll help you find a new artist based on your musical interests. If you do go, take advantage of the staff around you. They're qualified and a valuable resource when shopping for new music. We can only hope places like this maintain themselves while music is going digital. Record stores around the Bay Area have started to take a hit from online music. Let's hope Amoeba Music is here to stay.
Tons of used CD's

I'm not really sure where Amoeba stands anymore now that everything seems to be digitized. If, however, you are a collector of vintage vinyl/CD's then this is your place to be. There are literally hundreds of albums that fill this location. I think it's best to walk into the store with an open mind, because you really don't know what you will find. If you are in search of a specific album, I encourage you to ask the very knowledgeable staff and they will be sure to help you out. Amoeba is right on Telegraph, so there are lots of other vintage related stores around the area too if you like to dig for old treasures.
Vinyl paradise

If you're an audiophile with a penchant for vinyl and rare musical finds, Amoeba Records is the place to be. This massive sattelite shop of the famous LA and San Francisco record stores has massive collection of the most talented and prolific artists in both the musical mainstream and underground. Its gigantic wooden crates hold hard-to-find items the likes of which you've never seen, coupled with a helpful and devoted staff who are happy to either leave you to your LP flipping or talk animatedly to you about which releases they think would best compliment your independent sensibilities. Easily one of the best places in California for music fans of any subculture or genre.
