In the heart of the most progressive city around is one of the most progressive music festivals in the country. Established in 2008, Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival in San Francisco not only brings in five stages worth of A-list talent over the course of its three days, but it also highlights local musicians and artists, eateries, and even a wine tasting tent – not surprising given its proximity to Napa Valley.
Taking place every August in Golden Gate Park, an idyllic green-space in the city, the event attracts up to 60,000 people a day. Outside Lands heavily advocates environmental awareness and sustainability with an area dedicated to alternative energy, a solar stage, bike valets, and recycling programs.
The festival represents all segments of mainstream and indie music, young and old. Past performers have included artists ranging from The Killers, Radiohead, and Muse, to Tom Petty and Neil Young.
