Mission, San Francisco –
Steelers fans, sandwich seekers, and budget-minded boozers all find something to love at Giordano Bros., a longstanding favorite over in North Beach that opened its Mission location – a part of town not exactly known for sports bars – back in late 2011.
The split venue consists of a bar area to one side where yuppies and local suits looking for an after-work Happy Hour can grab a pull from one of twenty-four drafts, and several flat-screens across the open floor where everyone from lost frat boys to blue-collar Joes can catch the game.
As in the original, a selection of authentic Pittsburgh nosh is a major selling point, with a range of big All-In-One sandwiches lathered in meat on the menu, all of which ring in at around $7.
The décor is very All American, which might seem out of place in the hipster-heavy Mission, with lots of deer, squirrel, and jackalope heads mounted on the walls alongside retro, hand-painted advertisements and beer signs.
Pittsburgh football fans find a welcome home here, though when there’s no game, the college-heavy weekend party crowd turns its attention to shuffleboard, margaritas, and catching someone’s tipsy eye across the bar.
Quaint, casual, and about as unpretentious as a bar can get, Giordano Bros. is the kind of sports hang even the sports-phobic will be fans of.
Frat boys, college kids, blue-collar blokes, yuppies, old Mission geezers, businessmen, and Steelers fans, 20s to 50+.
American pop and rock on the stereo.
Several flat-screens tuned to sports.
Shuffleboard table.
Classic Pittsburgh All-In-One sandwiches, all served with fries, all pretty good candidates for inducing a coronary.
Happy Hour M–Tu 5–7pm, W–F 3–7pm.
Sides $2.50–$13.50, sandwiches $6.50–$7. Beer $4–$6/glass or $16–$20/pitcher, wine $7–$8+/glass or $28–$32+/bottle, cocktails $8–$10.
Casual: jerseys, t-shirts, jeans, shorts, simple dresses, sandals, flip-flops, sneakers.
Anytime a game is on (especially Steelers) or Friday and Saturday nights for a busy crowd of unpretentious revelers scarfing down sandwiches and suds.
Phoenix Irish Bar (811 Valencia Street) is another popular specimen of that rare breed of Mission sports bar.
