San Francisco Ballet's The Nutcracker Description

The San Francisco Ballet Company’s annual performance of The Nutcracker at the War Memorial Opera House transports audiences to a magical land just in time for the holidays.

The performance, which has been a San Francisco holiday tradition since 1944, features 70 company dancers, attracts close to 90,000 spectators each year, and runs throughout the month of December.

The Nutcracker depicts the story of a young girl and a wooden nutcracker as it comes to life and transforms into a prince on Christmas Eve. The prince takes the young girl to a fairytale Land of the Sweets where the audience sees characters like Drosselmeier, the Snow Queen, the Dewdrop Fairy, and the Sugar Plum Fairy as they jeté, battement, and pirouette across the stage.

The San Francisco Ballet’s The Nutcracker is a holiday classic that captivates audiences with elaborate costumes, pas de deux sequences, and sets that truly capture the magic of the story.

Tickets to this must-see wintertime spectacle range from $20-$165.

Every year since I was a little girl, my mom has taken me to the San Francisco Ballet's Nutcracker. While picking out a Christmas tree after Thanksgiving marks the start of the Christmas season, seeing the Nutcracker is the true signal to me that we are in the heart of the holiday season. Even though I have seen the Nutcracker numerous times, I continue to find new meaning in it as I grow older. At first I focused on the big picture and the story that was being told, whereas now I am able to concentrate on the elaborate costumes and the movements and interactions, not only among the principal characters, but among the more minute characters as well. Those young and old will find pleasure and delight in this holiday festivity.
