Information
Rome’s National Museum of the 21st Century Arts, also known as the MAXXI, was opened in 2010 and is dedicated to experimental contemporary art and architecture. The museum, built by architect Zaha Hadid, won the Royal Institute of British Architects’ 2010 Stirling Prize for its innovative and sleek design.
The two sections of the MAXXI, MAXXI Art and MAXXI Architecture, house both temporary and permanent works. The museum’s permanent collection of 300 works features both Italian and international artists. Italian artists and architects who belong to the museum’s permanent collection include Pier Luigi Nervi, Carlo Scarpa, Olivo Barbieri, and Letizia Battaglia.
Past temporary exhibitions at the MAXXI have featured artists like Italian painter Michelangelo Pistoletto, South African photographer Pieter Hugo, and Columbian sculptor Doris Salcedo.
The museum also features a Department of Education that caters to both adults and children, an auditorium, a public square, and an outdoor courtyard, which host events and large-scale works of art. Events at the MAXXI include artist seminars, music performances, live DJ sets, and yoga classes.
