Opened in 1990 in an abandoned building, Brancaleone (roughly translated to “strong as a lion”) is a cultural center and underground nightclub in the Nomentano district.
The self-financed venue bills itself as a social and political gathering place, bringing together activists, intellectuals, students, and other socially conscious types.
On Friday and Saturday nights, with the occasional Thursday or Sunday, the grungy venue showcases mostly musical performances. The crowd at Brancaleone tends toward the renegade set that comes in to soak up electronic music, reggae, and hip-hop performances from often obscure talents.
In addition to club nights, Brancaleone hosts theater, performance, fine arts, and film events, while in 2005, the organization behind Brancaleone, founded the radio station “Radio Popolare Roma.”
Brancaleone has several multipurpose rooms, and the venue is served by a full bar.
