"A Middle Eastern hookah bar just off Campo de' Fiori, Sciam is a peaceful haven in the midst of chaos._x000D_

A Middle Eastern hookah bar just off Campo de’ Fiori, Sciam is a peaceful haven in the midst of chaos.

Sensual Syrian music, the sweet smells of flavored hookah tobacco, and an exotic décor intermingle to create the perfect environment for both relaxed and lively conversation.

Divided into various levels and nooks, the long, wide lounge features exposed ancient Roman arches, Persian tapestries, and jeweled Turkish lamps in every color imaginable.

Although Arabic is the dominant language, that doesn’t seem to pose a problem for the lounge’s eclectic clientele – here it’s common to find Middle Eastern regulars and young French, Spanish, and Italian patrons sprawled on woven pillows around inlaid wood tables, sharing the decadent atmosphere and enjoying the occasional belly dancing.

The bar may not serve alcohol – try Syrian teas, Turkish coffee, and flavored tobacco instead – but in a city not known for its diversity, Sciam provides a welcome escape from the typical Italian nightlife.

Tip from Jonah:

Check out the bar’s adjacent basement shop where they sell the very cool jeweled lamps like the ones in the lounge, as well as blown-glass tableware and jewelry.

Sciam is my little haven when I need to "get out of Europe." Settle into one of the plush couches, breath in the scents of cardamom and tobacco, and let the music transport you out of Italy to somewhere more exotic and peaceful. Don't get me wrong--Rome is amazing, but sometimes you need to get away. I lived in Jordan and Sciam is the perfect spot to bring back those memories and practice Arabic. The owners are adorable and love when people talk to them about their hometown in Syria, so don't be shy. The staff is always prompt to refill your hookah coals, and though alcohol is not served here, the yogurt drinks are pretty good. Check out the pictures from various Mid East cities, and don't miss the belly dancing show after 10pm. This is a relaxing place where I like to end my nights out, but it's great at any hour!
