All roads don’t really lead here, but that doesn’t mean bars in Rome don’t line the streets. The nightlife begins slowly, after the requisite aperitivo that is such a fundamental part of Italian culture, and shifts outside to the streets and piazzas as the ever-fashionable partiers wander from bar to bar.
If hanging out in a piazza surrounded by picturesque ancient walls and fountains is too staid, those looking for a bit more action can take refuge in the energetic expanse of Rome bars. Testaccio is a great area to enjoy a lively bar scene, with just one winding street home to several cocktail spots and some great Italian dive bars, though the dive bar scene in Rome probably enjoys its highest concentration in Pigneto.
Stylish wine bars are the norm in Monti and the areas from Piazza di Spagna to Piazza Navona, while a rowdier younger crowd usually congregates at the bars from Campo de’ Fiori to Piazza Navona.
Makeshift bars pop up along the Tiber River during the summer, but those looking to escape the tourist crunch should head to San Lorenzo, an artistic neighborhood where anything goes, everything is encouraged, and young creative revelers let loose in festive bars.
