Folies Bergere Information

Folies Bergere - Theater in Paris.

The Folies Bergère is a cabaret music hall located in Paris in the 9th Arrondissement next to both the Cadet and Grands boulevards subway stations.

Opening in 1869, the theater, originally called the Folies Trévise, showed operettes, comic opera, popular song performances, and gymnastics. In 1872 the theater was renamed the Folies Bergère, which is loosely translated as the Extravagant Shepherdess after the nearby street, rue Bergère.

Later in the nineteenth century the Folies Bergère began to show music-hall reviews that featured more and more women with less and less clothing. The careers of many well-known female performers began at the Folies Bergère. These include: Maurice Chevalier, Mistinguett, Josephine Baker, and Fernandel. The American, Josephine Baker, was a huge success, catering to the Parisian fascination with négritude in the 1920s, by performing in little more than the now iconic banana skirt.

Nowadays, the Folies Bergère shows musicals, such as Cabaret and Zorro the Musical, and is also a venue for concerts.

Capacity at the theater is approximately 1, 600 seats.
