Bastille / Oberkampf - 11eme, Paris –
A visit to Cuba Compagnie may start off like a low-key day on a tropical beach, but it never ends that way!
With an unpretentious vibe and assorted crowd to match, the colorful venue opens early for those looking for budget-friendly breakfasts near the famed Bastille. The book-style menu caters to anyone looking to add some spice to their French diet, and features stories, songs, and anecdotes of Cuba amid the descriptions of picadillo and cod fritters.
Mojitos are the main cocktail of choice – especially during €15 mojito tastings on Tuesdays from 9 to 10pm – and soon after the workday ends, the bar fills with happy groups slinging Happy Hour champagne and exotic mixed drinks beneath the framed pictures of Havana and portraits of Hemingway that dot the walls.
DJs turn up the volume in the evenings to accommodate the crowd, as stylish expats and boisterous birthday girls drop their ceviches and dance wherever there’s room.
A quieter atmosphere usually prevails in the upstairs lounge, where old and newly formed dance partners can engage in spicy conversation as their stomachs settle from all that spicy food.
Bursting with color and Latin rhythms, Cuba Compagnie is an ideal spot to kick off the night – and equally great to kick off one’s shoes and dance till closing.
Stylish expats, dance-happy groups of ladies, dudes with mojo, couples, birthday partiers, unpretentious groups of locals starting the night, tourists in need of something distinctly un-French to eat, mid-20s to late 30s.
DJ spins everything from Cuban beats to Marc Anthony most nights from 8pm.
Free salsa lessons on Sundays 6:30–9pm.
Full menu of Cuban and assorted Pan-American dishes, including picadillo, cod fritters, salads, and Latin desserts. Happy Hour daily 4–8pm.
Brunch noon–3pm Saturdays and Sundays.
Brunch €18, appetizers €5–€12, entrées €15–€29+. Beer €8, wine €6/glass or €14–€38+/bottle, cocktails €15.
Stylish casual: white t-shirts, jeans, colorful button-downs, crisp white slacks with room to move, flowy day dresses, shawls, heels that come off as fast as they go on.
Fridays for the biggest crowds getting spicy to the nightly DJ or Sundays to learn how to salsa.
La Cantoche Paname (40 Boulevard Beaumarchais) is a kitschy restaurant decorated in everything from Looney Tunes masks to paintings made out of candy. The themed menu is designed to imitate – though not taste like – the school lunches of yesteryear, and a decent cocktail selection and regular weekly events have made the venue popular with unpretentious locals.
