Mille neuf cent soixante dix neuf – or 1979 for short – is a chic restaurant, bar, and club popular with a stylish clientele of hipsters and trendy young professionals.
A sleek patio draws an after-work crowd looking to loosen their ties and kick back with a bottle of wine, while the eclectic interior offers plenty of space for couples, students, and edgy artists to pull up a plastic chair and admire the far-out collection of art and knickknacks.
From miniature grandfather clocks, go-go boot vases, and a teddy bear in a birdcage to goat-hoof coat hangers, the place oozes with oddities that form an unusual backdrop for the hip patrons sipping gimlets and sharing foie gras in the restaurant.
The weekday dining scene makes way for dancing on the weekends when smartly-dressed groups of girlfriends and college kids toss back shots before heading down to the vast dance club, where theme parties get university kids pouring in on student nights and hipsters on rock nights.
Once the DJ takes to the turntables, the crowd cuts loose, packing the dance floor with sweaty good humor.
Though its name may sound très retro, 1979 brings its partiers to present day and offers them a fashionable place to kick back and groove until dawn.
Cool and stylish mix of young professionals, trendy couples, hipsters, students, and post-grads, early 20s+.
Ambient hip-hop, soul, and jazz in the restaurant. DJ spins electro, hip-hop, soul, rock, and rap in the club.
Full menu including octopus and tomato soup, sea bream, and crème brulée.
Cover charge €0–€7/includes one shot, €10/includes one cocktail. Appetizers €8+, entrées €17+. Beer €8, wine €3.90+, cocktails €9, champagne cocktails €11, shots €5 or 10 for €30. Coat check €2.
Smart: chic jeans, suit jackets, blouses, sundresses for the restaurant; dresses, slacks, heels for the club.
Friday or Saturday nights for dinner upstairs and then the club scene downstairs.
La Conserverie (37 bis rue du Sentier) is just a short metro ride away and serves some of the best cocktails in Paris.
