Pop In Information

Like a slice of downtown New York in Paris, Marais Nord bar Pop In is a cool-without-trying space with three levels: a lounge, a bar, and a basement dance floor. The spot is filled with Parisian hipsters who are fans of the underground vibe, the low-key music, and the artsy crowd. Both twee and rock and roll, Pop In has been a popular destination since 1997.

Mysterious stairways likely lead to surprises on different floors – perhaps a retro sing-a-long around a piano or an impromptu dance floor. Music at Pop In is dominated by Britpop and electropop, though 80s tunes and the latest alternative bands also have a showing. The small space manages to squeeze in bands, often from far-flung lands, for occasional concerts. Sunday open mic nights at Pop In likely lead to hilarity and irony.

The group behind the bar also runs in-house label Pop In Records; music samples and sales are available on the bar’s website. Pop In is open every evening until 1:30am. Metro stops are Oberkampf or Saint Sebastien Froissart.

Where the locals and international peeps meet

I've been to the Pop In a couple of times and I always have a good and chill time. Depending on the day, the Pop In can either be crazy busy or laid back. The bartenders are incredibly friendly and speak various languages. The bar also attracts many international travelers in their early to mid 20's. The Paris folk also like to come out to the Pop In making a cool local/international mix. There's a piano on the second floor you can play and there's a hidden dance floor in the cave. Dancing and music not your thing? Then go to the back on the second floor and grab a spot with your friends. You can sit down, drink whatever you like, talk and chill for hours.
Get a beer, meet people, play some music and go straight to the dancefloor.

One of my favourite places in Paris. Put on a pair of jeans, a sweater, boots and come enjoy cheap drinks while listening to The Cure. You'll be surprised how friendly the staff is! When you step in, the decoration sets the mood: red walls, rock bands posters, vinyl sales. You can tell: this is the place for people who enjoy music. It's always crowded, so be sure to arrive early to get some space in the lounge area on the 2nd floor where you'll be greeted by and old piano. Feels like dancing? Take the downstairs to the cave. Be sure to check the agenda to see if the place holds any concerts. The only problem: there is no lock on the restrooms door. Whether it's to enjoy some good vibes or to talk about how great were the 80's/ analog cameras with perfect strangers, you'll not be disappointed by this place!
