Party Earth Café Beaubourg Review

The Scene

Just one of the many venues in the Costes chain of bars and restaurants, Café Beaubourg is set apart by its high-traffic location near the Centre Pompidou between Les Halles and the Marais.

Just one of the many venues in the Costes chain of bars and restaurants, Café Beaubourg is set apart by its high-traffic location near the Centre Pompidou between Les Halles and the Marais.

A place to see and be seen, the café is easily recognizable by the immense white awning that covers the outdoor terrace and the crowd that fills it to capacity.

Inside, stark black leather seating contrasts with the pristine white columns rising to the second floor, a chic restaurant area with excellent views of both the café below and the neighborhood itself.

A menu of traditional French fare like burgers and steak tartare, along with healthier choices like fresh organic avocado, is accompanied by a list of fine wines and cocktails.

The central location and long opening hours attract a wonderfully diverse clientele that consists of everyone from super-chic Parisian professionals to design-conscious tourists.

Regardless of who shows up, Café Beaubourg always has a relaxed and inviting atmosphere, making it an excellent spot any time of day, whether for afternoon cocktails, a late dinner, or even an early morning pre-flight cup of coffee.

Tip from Adriana:

If you really like Café Beaubourg, you might also want to try another Costes venue, La Société (4 Place Saint-Germain-des-Prés) in Saint Germain. A more upscale restaurant with a VIP entrance and first-rate service, it’s a great place for a special date.

  • Crowd

Mix of fashionable Parisians, jet-setters, expats, regulars, and tourists, 20s to 40s.

  • Entertainment / Music

Background music and occasional DJs for special events. The Centre Pompidou is famous for street performers of all types, which can be enjoyed from the bar’s outdoor terrace.

  • Food / Miscellaneous

Classic French dishes and some healthier options.

  • Prices

Lunch and dinner menu €11–€35. Beer €8, wine €11+.

  • What to Wear / Dress Code

Casual by day, smart casual to dressy by night.

  • Hot Nights / When to Go

Because the Marais is the only area in Paris that is completely open on Sundays, Sunday afternoons draw the most interesting mix of people.

See and Be Seen

The key to the success of le Café Beaubourg? Location, location, location. One look at the ultra-modern seating on the terrasse--all of the chairs directly face the constantly percolating Place Pompidou, with its parade of street musicians, balloon artists and artisans of giant wobbling soap bubbles--and you will see the appeal. But the location and atmosphere come with a corresponding price tag. Sure, the career waiters who circulate among the rows are courteous and attentive, and the drink menu respectable, but the prices are higher than those of the surrounding bars by at least 2-3 euros. Great for people-watching: free entertainment, and your conversation will never lack fresh material. But if you're looking for a place to catch up over a casual drink, try a smaller bar on the other side of Sebastopol, where you can sit across from your companion instead of watching the parade side by side.
Prime Location, Good Service

My friend and I stumbled in on a drizzly afternoon walking to the Pompidou. There are many great shops in the area, and also with its proximity to the museum, it's no wonder this spot gets a lot of traffic. The servers were very attentive, which in Paris can seem like a luxury at times. Everything we ordered was tasty. For lunch I wasn't very adventurous, and just ordered the Caesar Poulet, but even so the salad was light and fresh. Even the dressing was memorable. Inside the venue is quite large, probably a good pick if you're going out with a large group. Tables are evenly spaced so you aren't eating on your neighbor's lap, which again in Paris it is nice to have a little breathing room. Decor is clean, contemporary and you could say it lacks a certain Parisian charm you might find in a smaller bistro. But if you're looking for an elegant place to get a good meal, I would definitely recommend Le Café Beaubourg.
