Party Earth Bistrot des Artistes Review

The Scene

Bistrot des Artistes in Paris’ 5eme is an art-filled bar where conversation is king & rum is queen. Chill out & chat in Paris with Party Earth.

Tucked away in a quiet corner of the Left Bank, Bistrot des Artistes is an informal and relaxed bar ideal for those looking to unwind with friends on a cold Parisian night.

Although green spotlights – coupled with the spiky typeface of the bar’s sign – may give the façade a ghostly feel, any eerie sensibilities are lost upon entry into a warm room that consistently bubbles with the sounds of ska.

A diverse range of artwork covers most of the walls – it is “The Artist’s Pub,” after all – including brightly colored murals, pop portraits, graffiti, and photos of faraway lands, along with African wooden masks that peep out from nearly every corner.

The bar and a handful of tables take up much of the narrow space up front, with a little more room afforded by a small area in back that’s usually populated with a posse of cool students laughing their way through simple €3 Happy Hour pints, glasses of house red, or the wide selection of rum-based and fresh fruit-laden cocktails.

Precarious stairs lead to a sparsely decorated basement lounge that features bare, honey-colored stone walls and utilitarian benches, where additional groups of intellectual kids chat and argue politics and put off their important essays till tomorrow.

Its half-hidden nature, teamed with all the intimate seating areas, makes Bistrot des Artistes a true hidden gem – one clearly treasured by its chilled-out regulars…once they find it.

Tip from Jonah:

On Saturday nights, a crowd from Shakespeare & Co. – the famous Anglophone bookshop nearby – usually drops in after work. Join them to stretch your intellect!

  • Crowd

Intellectual clans, creative folks, college kids from Sorbonne University up the road, artsy types, people who know the difference between Marxism, Communism, and Socialism, 20s to 30s.

  • Entertainment / Music

Live reggae, ska, and jazz funk Wednesdays and Thursdays 9pm–midnight. Similar playlist all other times. Alternative is the name of the game – no Katy Perry or Lady Gaga in here!

  • Food / Miscellaneous

No food, but there are several budget-friendly restaurants nearby.

Happy Hour all night Mondays and Tu–Sa 5–9pm.

  • Prices

    Beer €4.50–€7, wine €3/glass or €15/bottle, cocktails €5–€8, shots €2–€3.

  • What to Wear / Dress Code

Artsy casual: V-necks, hoodies, loafers, sneakers, comfy jumpers, jeans, pumps, lots of Converse.

  • Hot Nights / When to Go

Mondays for the all-night Happy Hour specials or Fridays and Saturdays for the biggest college-aged crowd chatting loudly and getting giddy on rum.

  • Close By

The Long Hop (25 Rue Frédéric Sauton), with its three floors of drinking space and a staff that speaks numerous languages, is often considered to be Paris’ international student drinking headquarters.
