Running of the Bulls Description

© sanfermin.pamplona.es

The daily Running of the Bulls is clearly the highlight of the festival. Starting on Calle de Santo Domingo, the bulls and runners proceed to Calle de Mercaderes, then down Estafeta to Telefónica, and finally end in the Plaza de Toros. Of course, it’s not necessary to participate to enjoy the full effect – watching the action from a great vantage point is thrilling enough. See The Run section for more details.

Toya Apr 16, 2013 Imagine your adrenaline is at top speed, your palms are sweaty and shaking a little, and your feet can't stay in place because of your anxiousness as to what is going to come around the corner. You already know it's going to be a raging bull, but you do not know where his target practice will center. The anxiety of the crowd's energy reaches you and you scramble with them. It is almost like a beautiful dance as your feet continue to move and steer you at the control of your instincts. This heart pumping movement is Running of the Bulls and there's nothing else like it. You are one with the crowd as you all move about to get to the best possible position to begin running. Once you catch the eye of the bull you know you're on top and instinctively move in the opposite direction. Run! This verb is now your friend. You laugh it off as you realize that you are not the target for the bull today and you won the race against yourself.
Spencer Fortier Feb 21, 2013 What do the New York City Marathon, the Tough Mudder, and the Running of the Bulls all have in common? Well, all three of these events require physical training, running, and building up a sweat. However, what differentiates the Running of the Bulls, more commonly referred to as “El Encierro”, is that during this event you are running for your life while breaking a sweat in order to stay out of the way of a 2,000 pound animal with horns. Pamplona, Spain is the host to this high profile event of the San Fermin Festival which takes place from July 6-14, but the actual running of the bulls begins the following day on the 7th. As many are aware, the attire for this event is key and sacred to many of the locals and officials as well. It consists of simply a white shirt, white pants, a red bandana, and a red sash used as a belt. In recent years though participants are beginning to dress up in their own fashion and costumes, whether that is regular shorts and a t-shirt or a banana costume. In order to participate in this run, one must be sober and have the proper running shoes on. The local police are very serious about these requirements and will have no problem leading your drunken booty to the sideline to spectate. Beginning at 8:00 in the morning, with a rocket signifying the start of the run, where six bulls are released for a total of 825 marked off meters until they reach the Plaza de Toros (Plaza of the Bulls). In this arena several bulls are released to let the runners have their chance at being their own matador. However, one must be careful in how you treat the bulls or you could be facing a face full of fruits and vegetables from an irritated crowd. Once this segment is complete the crowd moves the party back to the streets. If you are the adventurous type who is looking for thrilling escapades, then I strongly urge you to do your homework, pack your bags and make it out for this prestigious event. After all if Ernest Hemingway was up for the challenge than you should be too!
