Whitney Museum of American Art Information

The Whitney Museum of American Art, located in New York's Upper East Side, is a modern art museum which focuses on American artists from the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.

Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney originally founded the museum in 1929, when her gift of 700 works of American art was declined by the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It was then that Whitney decided to start her own museum.

Originally located on Eighth Street, the museum moved to its current location in 1954 as the collection expanded. Artwork featured at the Whitney Museum of American Art include pieces by Andy Warhol, Jackson Pollock, and Mark Rothko.

The Whitney is also known for its emphasis on showcasing living artists. In their Biennial display, works by up and coming artists are the highlighted exhibit. The gallery features a gift shop as well as a restaurant. In 2015 the museum is slated to relocate to a space in the trendy Meatpacking District next to the Highline.

Blues Exhibit

I attended the Blues exhibit at the Whitney in April and was astounded at the content and beauty of the exhibit. The museum curators gave us headphones for an interactive and musical experience. The Whitney itself has a diverse and joyous environment.
Too cool

The Whitney is not your typical museum. Sure, it has the white walls, oddly-shaped seating, recycled air, and decent cafe that any other museum in the city sports, and that is, overall, a really good thing, as it lends professionalism to the space. However, the art featured here is far different from your typical oil paintings of French nobles or Georgia O'Keefe floral hoo-has. This is a museum for bizarre full-room installments, strange disarming pieces that tap into man's primal subconscious, and other general nutter butter art that makes the average shmuck scratch their head and wonder what they're feeling (could it be...love?). For the art lover who enjoys life outside of the frame, this place is your new Mecca.
One of the Best

I absolutely love The Whitney. It's a tribute to so many of the great American artists, and has huge variety of artwork displayed. There is almost something for everyone here. Personally The Whitney displays some of my favorite kinds of art - it's all fairly contemporary without getting too crazy. While it's still a hefty museum, it's more more manageable than say The Met. Start your day early at Central Park and make your way over to the cafe - enjoy some amazingly fresh orange juice and watch the ducks on the lake. Then, with a full belly and content heart, go to The Whitney. And enjoy.
Incredible Museum

One of New York City's true gems - this museum is host to some of the most amazing exhibits in art history. If you haven't seen Yayoi Kusama's "Fireflies on the Water," it's an absolute must before Oct. 28th. Here's a preview: http://whitney.org/Exhibitions/FirefliesOnTheWater/Video
