The Louis Armstrong Stadium is an outdoor tennis court located in Queens, New York and is the second largest court in the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. The stadium was originally dubbed “The Singer Bowl” in 1964 when it was erected for the World’s Fair, but was later renamed for jazz legend Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong.
The stadium underwent major renovations in preparation for the inaugural year of the US Open in 1968, when it was modified to hold 18,000 spectators. As the primary stage for the Open during the late 20th century, matches at the Louis Armstrong Stadium have included tennis legends such as John McEnroe and Andre Agassi. In 1997, the stadium was replaced by the Arthur Ashe Stadium as the main court and was downsized to a 10,000-person capacity, making it the second largest stadium in the complex. Concessions at the Louis Armstrong Stadium are available in the outdoor food court in the Billie Jean King grounds. Public parking is also available for the center as a whole, but since it is often overcrowded due to its proximity to the Mets’ Citi Field, many spectators prefer to take the subway.
