The Billie Jean King National Tennis Center is a 46-acre outdoor sports complex best known for hosting the internationally viewed US Open for tennis. Located in Queens, New York, the United States Tennis Association opened the grounds in 1978 and renamed it after Billie Jean King in 2006.
The facility houses 33 courts, including the world’s largest tennis stadium, Arthur Ashe Stadium. The latest major renovations to the grounds were completed in 2006, adding classrooms, fitness facilities, a hospitality center, a museum, a large outdoor international food court, and several restaurants. As the host of the US Open, matches at Billie Jean King National Tennis Center have included world-renowned athletes from Roger Federer to Serena Williams who grace their courts annually, not to mention the dozens of celebrity spectators. Because of the high-profile matches, the largest stadiums are equipped with state-of-the-art “Hawk Eye” technology, which allows the players to call for challenges during the matches.
In the months when the US Open isn’t in town, the courts are available for public use. Public parking is available on the grounds; however, as the venue is adjacent to the Citi Field baseball stadium, many spectators prefer to take the subway.
